            [October 31, 2023]
While today is the first day of November, and the fields around the
county are looking pretty bare, a trip to Springfield on Halloween
revealed that there are still a few fields with corn standing,
waiting to be shelled and taken to the grain bins. |

            |
Earlier in October Heather Gaule and Stephanie Hall
caught some pictures of harvest while the weather was still warm.

The first set of shots features Gleason Farms. Bill,
Mike, Dave, and Sam are the producers who were busy with harvest,
hoping to get their crops out of the field before threats of wetter
and cooler weather arrived. Bill likes using his vintage Oliver on
the farm at harvest time, and the tractor, though smaller than most
today, fulfils the needs of the farm.

Once the corn is shelled in is headed off to the
elevator or perhaps on-farm grain storage.

The next few pictures were taken by Stephanie Hall
and show the Gleaner combine in the field behind her house.

Then, the third set is taken by D.L. Drake on
Halloween day. The weather was much colder, but thankfully not as
wet as it had been over the weekend. Again corn was being shelled
and hauled off to the elevator. At the elevator the use of
on-ground- storage could be an indication that this year’s harvest
			is yielding well.
