Obituary

Allen Douglas Hickerson was born April 1st, 1974, in Great Bend, KS. On October 8th, 2023, after nearly two years battling colon cancer, he passed peacefully from this life in his home in Pawnee. He was 49. Allen was preceded in death by his parents, Galen and Evelyn (Douglas) Hickerson. He is survived by his sister, Carolyn (Hickerson) Davis; her husband, Ben; and 2 nephews, Jonah and Jaxon.

Allen grew up in a minister's family serving small town churches all over the Midwest. His love for God and heart for ministry took him to Ozark Christian College where he studied Old Testament and Hebrew Bible. His wisdom as well as his love for the Old Testament and Jewish traditions earned him the nickname Rabbi. He graduated in 1997 and after a short ministry in Weiner, Arkansas, Allen headed back to school. While pursuing his master's degree in Hebrew Bible at Lincoln Christian Seminary, Allen started preaching at Cornland Christian Church. The congregation at Cornland and the surrounding communities became his family in this ministry that would span the next 25 years at Cornland.

In 2014, Allen rejoined the world of academia as an adjunct professor at St. Louis Christian College. There he was able to share his passion for the Old Testament with the next generation and realize a lifelong dream of teaching at a Bible college. In recent years, Allen also became a board member at the Pawnee Public Library where he happily played librarian as often as he was able.
Over the years Allen was steadfastly devoted to seemingly small things that ultimately made a big impact. From "Monday School" and Easter egg hunts for the kids in his church, to weeks of church camp at Lake Springfield where he often dressed up as a Bible character, to countless hours in waiting rooms with loved ones, Allen truly was the hands and feet of Jesus to those around him.

In his spare time, Allen was a writer. From blog posts to crime noir to dinosaur limericks, he kept his audience laughing, groaning, thinking, and discussing. He had a brilliant memory. Allen had large portions of the Bible memorized and was always ready to engage in discussion of any passage or topic with a stranger at a restaurant or a friend online. He also remembered every single piece of useless trivia he ever learned and happily shared that as well.

Allen loved hot peppers, cold coffee, obscure old monster movies and lucha libre. He left quite an impression on all who met him. Allen will be remembered for his sharp wit, bad puns, humble wisdom, extensive Aloha shirt collection, and his heart for God.

"Well done, good and faithful servant.... Come and share in your master's happiness."

A Celebration of Life for Allen will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, October 30th, 2023, at Cornland Christian Church in Cornland.

Memorial donations may be made in Allen's name to Cornland Christian Church.
