[November 16, 2023]  Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields is "progressing well" and expected to start Sunday in Detroit, head coach Matt Eberflus confirmed Wednesday.

Fields missed the last four games with a right thumb injury that affected his grip strength. Undrafted rookie Tyson Bagent led Chicago (3-7) to a 2-2 record in his absence.

Fields, who returned to practice Wednesday, has been sidelined since sustaining a dislocated thumb on his throwing hand in a Week 6 loss to the Minnesota Vikings on Oct. 15.

Fields, 24, is 1-5 as a starter this season, completing 61.7 percent of his passes for 1,201 yards with 11 touchdowns and six interceptions. He has rushed for 237 yards and a touchdown and has been sacked 24 times.

Bagent relieved Fields in the Minnesota game and has started the last four games. He has completed 65.7 percent of his passes for 859 yards with three touchdowns and six interceptions.

Bagent, 23, will return to the backup role Sunday against the NFC North-leading Lions (7-2).
