Heritage in Flight Museum hosts special event on Veterans Day

[November 16, 2023]    On Veterans Day, the Heritage in Flight Museum at the Logan County Airport hosted a special open house event featuring members of the Springfield Ham Radio Operators club and two cadets of the Civil Air Patrol.

The museum hangar was open for tours as was the museum. Both feature artifacts and memorabilia from various wartime efforts by the United States in general and the Air Force in particular.

In the hangar the ham radio operators guided guests through the process of ham radio operation. With a written script, they instructed the CAP cadets on how to initiate radio calls.

Radio control airplanes were also on hand, but due to the very windy conditions were not able to go up.

The museum is filled with interesting items including a wide variety of military uniforms, photos, newspaper clippings and flags of countries that have been overpowered by American armed forces. Flags from the Nazi Regime as well as from China are hanging predominately in the museum, with newspaper headlines from the World War eras illustrating battles won, and the downfall of persecution of Jews during the Hitler years.

The museum also features a gift shop that hosts several museum and Lincoln/Logan County souvenirs.

Stacy Watchel is the president of the Heritage in Flight Museum board. She said that while the museum is not always open, it is almost always available to be opened. She said folks should be aware that there are phone numbers on the door of the museum that call be called, and someone will come to the museum to open the doors and offer tours and information about the museum.
