Pegula is bidding to win her fourth title of
the season. She hopes to continue her quest when she faces
Belgium's Yanina Wickmayer, who recorded a 6-3, 6-1 victory over
Polina Kudermetova of Russia.
Also on Friday, China's Yuan Yue seized a 7-5, 7-6 (7) win over
fourth-seeded Marie Bouzkova of the Czech Republic. Yue will
square off in the semifinals against 116th-ranked Emina Bektas,
who notched a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 win over Kimberly Birrell of
Australia.
Hong Kong Tennis Open
No. 6 seed Martina Trevisan of Italy reached the first
hard-court semifinal of her career with a 6-4, 6-3 win over
third-seeded Elise Mertens of Belgium.
Trevisan's next foe is Czech Republic native Katerina Siniakova,
who rallied from a 4-2 deficit in the first set to notch 7-6
(1), 6-4 win over 2017 champion Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova of
Russia.
Fifth-seeded Anna Blinkova of Russia seized a 7-6 (3), 6-3
victory over Sara Sorribes Tormo of Spain. Blinkova advanced to
face Canada's Leylah Fernandez, who recorded 34 winners in a 7-6
(2), 6-2 win over Linda Fruhvirtova of the Czech Republic.
Zhengzhou Open
Zheng Qinwen cruised to a 6-3, 6-2 win over Anhelina Kalinina
of the Ukraine to advance to the semifinals of a tournament on
her home soil.
The 21-year-old Chinese player recorded 32 winners and eight
aces en route to winning her match in 86 minutes. She advanced
to face Italian Jasmine Paolini, who won the first nine games in
a 6-0, 7-5 victory over Laura Siegemund of Germany.
Seventh-seeded Barbora Krejcikova of the Czech Republic led 6-3
in her match with Lesia Tsurenko before the Ukrainian qualifier
retired due to back pain. She will face eighth-seeded Russian
Daria Kasatkina, who advanced to the semis in a walkover after
No. 4 Ons Jabeur of Tunisia withdrew because of a knee injury.
