Obituary
Homer Jackson Poffenbarger (Jack)
passed peacefully on April 7, 2023 at the age of 87
years in Pinehurst, NC.
Jack was the third of four children born in Beason,
Illinois to Homer Poffenbarger and Fern Crowe
Poffenbarger on February 21, 1936. Jack was raised
on a farm in Beason and always had a very close bond
with his siblings and a multitude of cousins. He
played sports in high school and was quite the
charmer. He met Marjorie Moriearty (Marj) in high
school and they started dating after prom of their
junior year. They married on January 9, 1955 and
welcomed their first of 6 children in December of
that year.
Jack tried on many hats in the job market during the
early years. In 1966, he moved his family to Joliet,
Illinois to work with an uncle and cousin, moving
houses. This adventure led to learning the carpenter
trade and he became a member of the Carpenters Local
174. Over the years, he became his own boss,
specializing in remodeling work. In early 1984, he
and Marj relocated to Augusta, Georgia for better
work opportunities.
Although it was difficult to leave Illinois and deep
family roots as well as their greatly loved and
adored grandkids, he and Marj found new avenues open
up for both of them and enjoyed a much warmer
climate. Jack loved his work and was successful in
remodeling well known chain restaurants, assisted
living facilities and as a foreman/supervisor on
military site builds. Jack and Marj joined Unity of
Augusta Church where they became essential assets in
beautifying the church grounds along with
implementing improvements and repairs to the church,
when and where needed. Many church friends became
and remain extended family.
Jack loved horses and he could often be found riding
horses in his free time on the farm where they lived
for several years. The annual Augusta Futurity was a
favorite time of year for Jack and he attended every
year that he could. He had always wanted to be a
cowboy and The Futurity gave him a little taste of
that life. His favorite movie star was John Wayne
with westerns at the top on his list of tv shows and
movies. He was a lover of country music with Johnny
Cash holding the top spot in his repertoire. He
loved watching college basketball and football and
was a Bears fan all the way. He also really enjoyed
watching the Masters and attending when given the
rare opportunity. One Christmas, he was gifted a set
of golf clubs and a membership to a local golf club.
He was overcome with emotion and spoke often that it
was the best gift he had ever received. He enjoyed
many years of play with those clubs and took them on
every road trip, just in case he got the chance to
spend some time on a course (the golf clubs always
somehow "fit").

Trips back "home" to Illinois were
planned a few times a year to visit the kids,
grandkids and relatives and sometimes, to coincide
with Jack and Marj's class reunions or the Logan
County Fair.
Jack loved being a grandfather and was
affectionately known as gramps, poppop, pawpaw,
great grandpa, grandpa Jack, and pops by the
grandkids and great grandkids. He enjoyed hearing
about their antics and accomplishments. He taught
his sons and grandsons, Joshua and Justin, lifelong
carpentry skills that have served them well in their
own endeavors. His favorite pastime was playing
Rummy and he taught it to anyone that he could get
to sit for it, including the grandkids.
Jack was known at times to be gruff and
cantankerous, but if you really knew him, you knew
he was really a teddy bear on the inside.
In late 2021, Jack moved to Charlotte, NC for health
reasons. This time was filled with holiday and
birthday celebrations, homemade meals, playing cards
and everlasting loving memories.
He is survived by his six children: Kathy Gura,
Kevin Poffenbarger, Tim Poffenbarger, Jeff
Poffenbarger, Becky Poffenbarger and Jon
Poffenbarger, 18 grandchildren, 13 great
grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and
cousins.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents and
siblings, Robert Poffenbarger, Myrna Poffenbarger
Wilson, Luberta Poffenbarger Knauer and his wife of
62 years at the time of her passing, Marjorie
Moriearty Poffenbarger.
Cremation rites were performed by Midstate Cremation
and Funeral Service, Asheboro, NC.
