Boy Scout Germanfest a fun competition for the Rocking Chairs and the Kool Corns

 

[October 22, 2023]     Polka music playing, brats and hotdogs cooking, and people anxiously waiting in the drive thru. These are the sounds, smells, and sights one would have seen this past Saturday at the Boy Scouts’ Second Annual Germanfest, held at St. John United Church of Christ.

The scouts and scout leaders were working hard to get food to both people waiting in the drive thru as well as those that chose to eat inside. There were two meal options, one with a bratwurst and another with a hotdog.

Those meals also may have come with sauerkraut, potatoes, applesauce, a drink, and a dessert, depending on the meal you chose.

Jason Maxheimer, the local Scout Master, shared some information on the Germanfest event. Previously, Maxheimer shared, St. John was the one to put on Lincoln’s Germanfest, but handed it over to the Boy Scouts last year as a fundraising opportunity. The money raised will go to help fund some of the regular things the Boy Scouts do, such as monthly camping trips, uniforms, and awards. Mark Mathon, one of the Assistant Scout Masters, shared the money may also go to help purchase new tents.

The scouts themselves ranged from cubs all the way to eagles, with many somewhere in between. There were two patrols of young men working, the Kool Corns and the Rocking Chairs, with the former working mostly inside and the latter mostly outside. A friendly rivalry has developed between the two, with members of either side claiming their patrol to be the best.

Cameron, from the Kool Corns, argued that their superiority comes from the fact they have a flag while the Rocking Chairs do not.

Calvin of the Rocking Chairs, on the other hand, shared the history of their patrol’s name being what set them above the Kool Corns, as several patrols before them have taken on that moniker.

Either way, everyone seemed to be having fun and enjoying the food and music on offer.
