Once again today, our Pink Shirt pictures include a large number of people, most of whom are our friends and neighbors here in the community. The quantity of people helps us to remember that there are more than 70 types of cancer, including breast cancer.

Sometimes we have to wonder, what is this terrible disease that strikes so many of the people we know and love. The American Cancer Society through its website offers some straight forward explanations of what cancer is, and how it gets started in our bodies.

From the website:  "Cancer affects ONE in THREE people in the United States. Chances are that you or someone you know has been affected by cancer. Here is some information to help you better understand what cancer is. You are made up of trillions of cells that over your lifetime normally grow and divide as needed. When cells are abnormal or get old, they usually die. Cancer starts when something goes wrong in this process and your cells keep making new cells and the old or abnormal ones don't die when they should. As the cancer cells grow out of control, they can crowd out normal cells. This makes it hard for your body to work the way it should.

"For many people, cancer can be treated successfully. In fact, more people than ever before are leading full lives after cancer treatment."

On Wednesday, members of the Lincoln Rotary Club visited Allison Park to view the placement of two of the four park benches the club has donated to the city. The second set of two has been placed at the Ray White Park.

Seated on the bench are Club President Mike Starsta with Keith Leesman, behind the bench from the left are club members Bob Chamberlain, Dennis Campbell, Elley Burbage, Don Peasley and Darlene Begolka.
