To the editor: About ten days
ago, just before dark, I had a taste of what Lincoln was like when I
was young, and when neighbors were really neighbors.
My electricity went off. And of course, my
electric oxygen concentrator and my phone line were both dead. I
just assumed a squirrel had run into a transformer and prayed my
portable oxygen would last until it was fixed.
Meanwhile, I was alone (my husband passed three
years ago), with no phone to call for help. I do not use a cellphone.
I was getting cold and started thinking of all the bad things that
could happen. I am not a young, healthy person. I have a "home
helper" whom I depend on, but I had no way to call her or Ameren. I
use a walker and cannot even go down my front steps alone.
About that time, a woman knocked on my window
where I sit at my desk all day, on the computer. I did not know her,
but I was so happy she was here! She told me she had already called
Ameren for me. And told me she saw a tree fall on my house!
It was hard to believe! I know you have a limit on
words, but please allow me to thank the wonderful people who worked
all night and the next few days to put things right. Lincoln is
still Lincoln. I was born and raised here.

Mrs. Johnson who runs Johnson's Daycare was the
woman who came over and knocked on my window.
She then called Tonya Houghton (my home helper)
and she came right over with her phone!.
Within minutes, J & J Tree Service was here
getting the tree off of the lines so Ameren could get the
electricity back on. That took quite a while as it was a large tree.
Meanwhile, the man from Memorial Home Service in
Lincoln, had delivered several tanks of oxygen that needed no power
to run.
There was some damage to the roof and when the
tree was gone, Alex Doty who owns Outlaw Designs & Roofing came over
and fixed the roof before it rained.
It could have ended badly but for that one
neighbor who acted neighborly.
