Lincoln versus Newark for the tournament championship

Set one

Newark took a 3-0 lead over Lincoln to start set one and the Lady Railers quickly tied the set on a string of errors by the Norsemen. The teams were point for point with each other until the middle of the set. Lincoln would capture the biggest lead, 10-8 after Kloe Froebe figuratively-speaking took the air out of the ball with her monster kill. On the Lady Railers next play, Froebe was in motion, with her eyes set on the ball, as she gravitated toward the net for another kill. After Lincoln was called for a touch, the score was tied at 11-11. This time Newark went ahead 13-11. After a couple net serves and a call in the net on Newark, Lincoln went ahead 15-14. Lincoln went ahead 19-14 with Addy Qualters and Rebecca Burge blocking at the net and then Peyton Sasse put the exclamation mark on a couple kills herself. Lincoln was finally able to solidify a 21-17 lead and go on a 4-0 run to finish off the Norsemen. Burge earned a point for Lincoln on a tip, then it was Lily Holmes on the block to earn another point. An ace from Sasse and one more kill from Froebe ended the set with a final score of 25-17.

Set two

Lincoln captured a 3-0 lead in set two after Froebe made good on a kill and then a tip. Froebe and Alyssa Company combined on a big block to set the score at 4-1. With Sasse calling for the ball and hammering it down on the other side of the court, Lincoln was up 5-3. Burge’s tip from the middle surprised the Norsemen and the score was 6-5. Both teams would commit error after error at this point but the advantage was left to Lincoln, 8-7 the score. Makia Hassebrock then came up clutch with a kill from the right side that landed just inside the line near the Norsemen’s bench. Hassebrock’s next opportunity was good for a kill down the line and this gave Lincoln a 10-7 lead. Lincoln managed a 14-8 lead with Sasse and Company making the highlights with their kills.

Another highlight of the set was Company’s kill on the quick set by Addy Qualters, that one came after a long volley between the two teams. Sasse followed that up with a kill and the score was 17-11. A couple more kills by Froebe made the score 19-14 and then 22-17. A kill by Company in the middle put the score at 24-18.

A kill by Sasse down the middle, after the set by Qualters, gave Lincoln a 25-19 set two win and a tournament championship. After a quick team picture, the girls were off and running out of the gym in order to get back to Lincoln and get ready for the Homecoming dance.

Kloe Froebe was named to the all-tournament team. Froebe had 37 kills and 26 digs on Saturday.

Head coach Kaylee Lowery was happy with her team’s showing in the tournament, with all the extra excitement going on for Lincoln’s Homecoming.

“We had a great weekend at Mount Pulaski,” said Lowery. “It was a fun-filled weekend for the girls. Friday we had the homecoming parade, practice, and the homecoming football game and then Saturday we came to the tournament and the girls rushed home to get to the homecoming dance. Luckily, we were able to focus and get things done at the tournament. Kloe Froebe and Addy Qualters both had consistent, all around great games this weekend. The best part of the weekend was seeing some players really step up. Rebecca Burge and Alyssa Company were both huge in the middle and had a lot of impact on our wins. I’m pleased with how they played and what they contributed this weekend.”

The Lady Railers record is now 19-2 on the season.

Lincoln will travel to Mount Zion tonight in a non-conference matchup.
