The
Lady Railers defeated the Taylorville Tornadoes on Thursday night in
front of a fantastic crowd at Roy S. Anderson.
Lincoln won handily in two sets, 25-12 and 25-21.
Set one
Lincoln won the first point of set one on a tip by Kloe Froebe and
after a kill from Peyton Sasse, the Lady Railers were up 2-1.
Lincoln went ahead 5-3 after a couple Taylorville errors and then
our girls took a 6-4 lead on the quick set to Rebecca Burge for the
kill.
Froebe took over with two more fast kills to allow Lincoln an 8-5
lead.
A kill by middle hitter Alyssa Company made the score 11-6 and the
Taylorville front row really did not know what to do at this point.
After another kill by Froebe just caught the line deep in the
backcourt, the score was 12-6.
Lincoln was tallying the points quickly, in the midst of an 8-0 run.
After Company and Addy Qualters combined for the block, the
Tornadoes called timeout with the score 16-6.
Taylorville scored one point quickly after the timeout and then it
was Froebe’s turn again. From the middle, Froebe had a kill that was
so powerful and looked so effortless that it was gorgeous.
Known widely for her basketball skills, Froebe is working her way
into earning a reputation equally as dangerous on the volleyball
court. It’s a whole lot of fun to watch her annihilate volleyballs,
that’s for sure.
And another entertaining player to watch is Alyssa Company. She had
a beautiful kill from the middle after the perfect quick set from
Qualters and it was really clear at this point that Company and her
friends in the front row were really outplaying the Tornadoes and
their 6’3 middle.
Lincoln continued to dominate set one and after a huge kill from
Peyton Sasse, the score was 19-11. Sasse also handled the back set
from Qualters nicely and she proceeded to hammer it down the line
for a clean kill, 21-12 the score.
After a Taylorville error, Sasse’s next move was an ace to make the
score 23-12. Froebe’s kill made the score 24-12. Game point was
achieved without fanfare as the Tornadoes stumbled over each other,
committing an error to end the set at 25-12.
Set two
Froebe and Company began the scoring in set two with kills and
Lincoln was quickly in the lead 3-0.
The two teams exchanged blows evenly for much of set two, with
scores of 4-4 and 7-7 reached. Makia Hassebrock’s kill tied the game
at 8-8. Burge’s kill tied things at 9-9. Company’s kill put Lincoln
ahead 12-10 but eventually a 13-13 tie would flash on the
scoreboard.

After Froebe caught the baseline corner with another one of her
kills that made the crowd mumble, “Wow!” Lincoln was on top 14-13.
With Froebe taking a turn from the back row, she led the attack and
earned another kill, this time keeping Lincoln in front 15-14.
After Sasse’s block made the score 16-14, Lincoln put together a 6-0
run that calmed the tornadoes down. First, there was a perfect set
by Qualters to Sasse for the kill. Then Hassebrock earned another
kill.
Sasse awaited her turn and ended up with another kill, approaching
the net like a little wind up toy ready to take on an army.
Burge, who has really emerged as a threat as of late, then took her
turn at the net from the middle. Her kill would be the breaking
point for the Tornadoes, making the score 20-15 and forcing
Taylorville into another timeout.
Hassebrock and Burge then put together back-to-back kills and this
brought the score to 22-15. A 4-0 run by the Tornadoes happened
next, but no worries on Lincoln’s part. Burge’s tip put the Lady
Railers back on track and with the score 23-19, there was another
Tornadoes timeout called.
Lincoln’s final two points came by way of an ace by Sasse and one
more kill from Burge in the middle. Lincoln ends the night early
with a 25-21 victory in set two.
Lady Railers Coach Kaylee Lowery offered her thoughts on the win, as
the team played very solid overall against Taylorville.
“We had a great win over Taylorville tonight,” said Lowery. “We are
still working on focusing and pushing on second sets. Kloe Froebe
swung extremely well and contributed 14 kills and 5 digs. She’s been
a consistent and reliable leader in both the front row and back row
all season. I have to give credit to our passers tonight. Our serve
receive and defense was great. We passed a 2.62 and had 41 digs as a
team tonight. I’m extremely proud of that and that was led by Becca
Heitzig and Taryn Stoltzenburg.”
Lincoln improves to 21-2 on the season.
The Lincoln Junior Varsity team defeated Taylorville 25-14, 18-25
and 15-12.
The Freshman team lost 13-15, 10-15 and 7-15.
The Lady Railers will play at Springfield Lanphier next Tuesday
night and at Normal University High next Thursday night. The Normal
