Gerald Carter honored for 62 years of service to the Kiwanis

The Lincoln Kiwanis hosted their regular board meeting on Tuesday, September 26th at the Community Action Partnership of Central Illinois meeting room.

At the meeting, long-time member Gerald Carter was recognized for his 62-year membership to the club.

Club president Dirk Conrady presented Carter with a plaque of appreciation, telling him that today he was the honored guest at the meeting, and thanking him for his many years of service to the club and the community.

Carter in response to the plaque presentation stated, “Sixty-two years do go by pretty quick.” He added, “I’ve done my very best in the Kiwanis and I always felt that if you give your best the best comes back to you.” Carter said he was honored to be recognized and thanked the group.

Conrady asked him to remind the group what he always says. Carter then recited his brief mantra, “You can’t sell watermelons from an empty wagon.”

The meeting included a lunch of pizza and a cake decorated for the occasion, with a notation that said, “Thank you Gerald.”

Carter also felt led to speak about his prison ministry. He said that he had been at the prison the evening before for ministry to the inmates. He said he has been doing that for 40 years. He noted that as he ages it gets a little hard to get around and do the ministry, but he feels it is important to him and it is important to the men in the program.

Carter was invited to be the first to fill his plate with pizza and cake before the rest of the club members joined him.
