Mount Pulaski tops Riverton 9-4

Luke Martin led the Hilltoppers with three hits and three runs driven in on Monday night as Mount Pulaski defeated Riverton 9-4.

Martin gave the Hilltoppers their first lead of the game in the bottom of the third inning. Martin’s double drove in Chance Payne to make the score 2-1. The Hilltoppers earned their first run on Landon Smith’s sacrifice fly in the inning.

Mount Pulaski plated five runs in the fourth inning to take a 7-1 lead.

The highlights of the fourth inning included Tucker Fitzpatrick’s RBI double, Landon Smith’s RBI triple and Luke Martin’s RBI single.

Martin added an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth inning, driving in Payne, who had doubled to lead off the inning. Franklin Wade then drove in Martin on a ground out to give Mount Pulaski a 9-1 lead.

The Hawks started the top of the seventh inning with four straight singles. A runner thrown out at second, a ground out and a pop out would finally end the game but not before the Hawks scored three runs.

Mount Pulaski kept the lead and picked up the win by a final score of 9-4.

Eric Cooper started the game for Mount Pulaski and he earned the win. Cooper allowed three hits and one unearned run. He walked five and struck out six.

Aaron Volle pitched two and two-thirds innings in relief. He gave up five hits and two earned runs. Volle struck out one batter and walked one.

Luke Martin led the Hilltoppers by going 3-for-4 with three RBIs and one run scored.

Eric Cooper was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

Chance Payne was 2-for-3 with three runs scored.

Franklin Wade was 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.

Landon Smith and Tucker Fitzpatrick each had one hit for Mount Pulaski.

The Hilltoppers improved to 13-1 on the season.

Mount Pulaski will play at Illini Bluffs on Thursday. Game time is 4:30 p.m.
