Thursday afternoon, everything was perfect for Madisen Wurth and the Railers softball team.

Wurth pitched her first perfect game of her high school career. The freshman worked four innings versus Springfield Lanphier, tossing goose eggs up on the scoreboard in every category except one ~ strikeouts.

In her perfect outing, Wurth struck out seven Lions as her team was solid behind her and won 17-0. Wurth faced 12 batters and threw 50 pitches, of which 33 were for strikes.

Lincoln coach LeeAnn Gilbert had this to say about the team’s effort:

“It was a great win for us AS A TEAM! We made the plays defensively and Madi threw strikes. This entire year has been based on making improvements each and every game: what can we do better as a team and individually. Tonight our pitching, defense and offense showed up to help us secure a much needed win.”

Lincoln plated two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Regan Kutz smashed a triple for the only hit in the inning but with two walks Lincoln was able to capitalize and take a 2-0 lead.

Lincoln scored 12 runs in the second inning, but only had three hits in the inning. Wurth and Taryn Stoltzenburg each had singles while Emma Hutchison had a double. Nine walks in the inning put the Lions in all kinds of trouble. Lincoln was helped by three hit batters during this total collapse of the Lions pitching staff.

Lincoln took a 14-0 lead into the third inning where the inning started with an error. Wurth then singled and Faith Eckhardt doubled and another run scored. A walk, single and another walk soon followed and the Lincoln lead was 17-0. Kate Farnam had the run-scoring single sandwiched in between the walks.

Wurth threw just seven pitches in the fourth inning to retire the Lions and complete the perfect game.

Lincoln had seven hits off the Lions pitching staff.

Madisen Wurth led the team with two hits.

Taryn Stoltzenburg, Regan Kutz, Faith Eckhardt, Emma Hutchison and Kate Farnam each had one hit.

The Railers are now 7-16 on the season.

On Wednesday the team lost 7-6 to Pekin.
