Obituary

Shirley Aukamp, 87, of Lincoln, passed away peacefully in her sleep on July 29, 2024, at St. Clara’s Rehab and Senior Care in Lincoln.

Shirley was born December 9, 1936, in Gary, IN, the daughter of Sam and Esther (Sorensen) Will. Her family moved and she grew up on a farm near Thornton, IA, where her mother's family grew grain and livestock. Her father was from Altamont, IL and wanted to move the family to Illinois. In 1949 they moved to a small farm near Broadwell where she attended Broadwell School. She then attended Lincoln High School and ISU. She attended Zion Lutheran Church where she met her future husband, Eugene Aukamp. Gene and Shirley were married on November 27, 1955, before Gene entered the army. In 1959 they began their farming career west of Lincoln where they spent their lives. They raised four children.

Shirley was a lifelong volunteer, devoting her time to Zion Lutheran Church, Zion Lutheran School, 4-H, Logan County Fair, and Homemakers. As an active member of Zion, Shirley served as a Sunday School teacher, participated in the International Lutheran Layman's League, Ladies Aid, and LWML (Lutheran Women’s Missionary League). She led many AAL (Aid Association for Lutherans) fundraisers. Shirley and Gene were instrumental in starting Zion Lutheran School, spending endless hours on the planning and constructing of the school. She served six years on Zion's school board. She also organized Zion's school lunch program and the Market Day fundraising program.

This time of year, in years past, you would have found Shirley at the Logan County Fair. She served 20 years as a 4-H leader, was a member of Logan County Youth Council, and served on the Logan County Fair committee for the textile department. Shirley held every office in the Broadwell Homemakers Extension Unit and served as chairman of the Logan County Homemakers Extension Association.

For her exemplary service to her community Shirley was awarded Lincoln Courier's 1992 Citizen of the Year.

Shirley is survived by her sons, Glen (DiAnne), Mark (Angela), and Bret (Sally) Aukamp; daughter, Lori (Kirk) Clayton; ten grandchildren, Ashley Boyer, Emilee and Elena Aukamp, Soren and Calvin Aukamp, Johnathan, Matthew, Nathaniel, Abigail, Isaiah, and Samuel Clayton; and her sister, Sharon Urban.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Eugene.

Services for Shirley will be held at 11 a.m. am on Monday, August 5, 2024, at Zion Lutheran Church in Lincoln with Pastor Mark Thompson officiating. Visitation will take place two hours prior from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. also at the church. Burial will follow the service at Zion Cemetery in Lincoln.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Shirley’s name to Zion Lutheran School or Camp CILCA.

Arrangements have been entrusted by Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in Lincoln.
