[August 06, 2024]   As the 88th Logan County Fair neared its end, a 58 year tradition continued with several cakes being baked and judged before a live audience then auctioned off to the highest bidders to raise money for 4-H.

Judging the cakes was Tami Thomas, who went Culinary Institute of America and has worked in the baking industry. She made comments on the taste and appearance of each cake then wrote down the total scores.

Top four winners Rose Harrold, Shannon Carter, Alex Bergin and Jeanne Runyon.

Along with many veterans in the cake classic were new competitors Shannon Carter, Tracy Bergin and Alex Bergin.

Cake Classic superintendent Samantha Danosky is thankful for the sponsors such as McEntire’s Appliance, Darlene Begolka and Samsational Sweets who make the cake classic possible.

There were eight cakes auctioned off by Ty Tucker, which raised $4300. This amount will go directly to Logan County 4-H to support their programs.

At $675, Darci Culler was top bidder for the first place cake. Culler also donated a basket for the winner.

First place: Rose Harold- first place German Chocolate cake. Harrold is a veteran of the cake classic.

Second Place: new participant Alex Bergin-Angel Food Cake. Though it was Alex Bergin’s first time in the cake classic, he is no stranger to baking.

The top bidder for the second place cake was Matthew Xamis at $600. As Xamis has done for several years, he then donated the cake back to be auctioned again. This time Stacy Goodman won the bidding at $500.

Third place: new participant Shannon Carter- Chocolate Cake with chocolate frosting. Though it was Shannon Carter’s first time competing, her mother-in-law Carlene Carter competed many times over the years.

Top bidder was Jackson of Action Jackson Lawn Care at $225.

Top bidder was Jackson Johnson at $300.

Eighth Place: Carlene Carter-Yellow Cake with chocolate frosting. Carter is a veteran who has not participated in the cake classic for a few years.

Top bidder was Rod Conklin at $575.

Once the auction was over, those who baked cakes posed with their top bidder and Logan County Fair Queen Abby Arnold, Junior Miss Sophia Goodman and Little Miss Olivia Harmsen.

As the grand total of $4300 demonstrates, these bidders love to support a great cause and also get to enjoy a delicious cake.
