[August 23, 2024]   On Thursday evening the Lincoln Village Healthcare Center (next to the DMV) hosted a free community event with food, live entertainment, and activities that unofficially opened the Balloons Over 66 weekend.

This was the second year for the event since the Covid-19 pandemic continuing a years-long tradition prior to the pandemic.

Tammy Curry & Shelby Osborn

Business Office Manager Tammy Curry coordinated this year’s event and along with managers, activities staff, and housekeeping staff (and a few staff family members recruited for service) served the food and operated the outdoor activities. Curry said the goal for this event is “to get our name out there and to help the community and to support the Balloons Over 66 weekend.” She added, “We have a good facility and good teamwork. We take good care of our residents. They enjoy this event. A whole line of them are outside listening to the music.” Even though it is extra work, Administrator Brook West said, “It’s worth it! We’re having fun.” She said the Lincoln Village hopes to host a Halloween Trunk-or-Treat and perhaps even an Easter egg hunt in the future.

A good crowd of community members came to enjoy the free meal of pulled pork, baked beans, cole slaw, potato salad, watermelon, and soft drinks. The food was served efficiently from a front window of the facility, so there was very little wait to be served.

Entertainment was provided by Gary Osborne and Rick Campbell, local musicians who perform around Logan County. They entertained the audience with a range of classic country and oldie rock. Tables and chairs were set up under canopies near the musicians, so that diners could enjoy the music while they ate.

Kids enjoyed a bounce house, face painting, and games, and there were sno cones and popcorn for anyone who wanted some. The ever popular dunk tank was back again this year where a softball to the bullseye could send a staff member into the water. Walking up and smacking a hand to the bullseye also proved effective and efficient.

Staff and residents enjoyed this kick-off event as much as the community. Nurse Liaison Karen Halcomb said, “I love it! I love to see the people and the kids. I wish we could do it more often!”
