Padres starter Dylan Cease allowed four runs on
seven hits in 4 1/3 innings. He struck out four and walked four.
Yuki Matsui (4-2) got the victory and Tanner Scott claimed his
20th save.
Paul Goldschmidt went 3-for-3 with a two-run homer for the
Cardinals, who lost for the third time in four games.
Cardinals starter Miles Mikolas allowed four runs on six hits in
5 2/3 innings. He struck out three and walked one. Reliever John
King (3-3) took the loss.
In the Cardinals' first inning, Masyn Winn hit a single, went to
third on Alec Burleson's double and scored on a wild pitch.
Burleson later scored on Luken Baker's sacrifice fly for a 2-0
lead.
The Padres surged ahead 4-2 in the second inning.
Machado hit his homer to start the comeback. Jackson Merrill hit
a double, David Peralta followed with a single, then Luis
Campusano hit an RBI single, Mason McCoy hit a run-scoring
groundout and Arraez hit an RBI single.
The Cardinals loaded the bases in the second and third innings,
but Cease escaped both jams unscathed.
St. Louis took a 5-4 lead in the fifth inning. Brendan Donovan
singled, took second on a wild pitch, moved to third on a
groundout and scored on Lars Nootbaar's single.
Bryan Hoeing relieved Cease and allowed Goldschmidt's two-run
homer.
The Padres regained the lead, 6-5, in the seventh inning. McCoy
walked, Arraez hit a single, then San Diego executed a double
steal to set up Jurickson Profar's sacrifice fly.
Cronenworth followed with his go-ahead RBI single.
The Padres made it 7-5 in the ninth inning when McCoy doubled,
advanced on a flyout and scored on a wild pitch.
