[August 29, 2024]    On Sunday, August 25, St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Emden hosted a Harvest Festival for the community.

St. Peter’s Pastor Keith Ray said the festival provided a “pat on the back” for farmers before the harvest starts. He asked some of the farmers from the community to tell everyone what they like about farming.

Pastor Ray’s sermon was titled “the splendor of God’s goodness.” The verse it was based on was Psalm 85:12 which says, “the Lord will indeed give what is good and our land will yield its harvest.”

Ladies from the church served a lunch of pulled pork, baked beans, cole slaw and dessert. Several tents were set up in the shaded area of the church property, which provided a nice spot for people to sit and visit on the hot day.

Near the church, two tractors were parked. Hay bales topped with pumpkins and gourds were set up by the sidewalk.

Church members were asked to bring donations for the Emden food pantry.

During the festival, Pastor Ray drew names for baskets and other door prizes. The grand prize drawing was for a half hog.

Fun activities included corn hole, building blocks, a marble game and a bouncy house. Kids also enjoyed the church playground equipment. One area was set up for people to crack open pecans and walnuts.

Ally Leesman, who helped organize the event, said Pastor Ray came up with the idea because our community is so engrossed in agricultural and farming. We wanted to do something pre-harvest before Labor Day.

It was also a good community outreach event since the whole community was invited.

Many community members showed up to enjoy a day of food, fun and fellowship recognizing the importance of farming.
