The Lady Railers 2024 home opener versus the Champaign Centennial Chargers on Thursday night at Roy S. Anderson was a success.

The Lincoln Varsity squad defeated the Chargers in two sets, 25-22 and 25-14. The Lincoln JV team won 25-12 and 25-17. The Chargers defeated Lincoln’s freshman team 25-9 and 25-17.

Before the Varsity game started, the 2023 Lady Railers State Runner-Up team was announced and their banner was unveiled on the wall by Principal Dwight Stricklin. The 2023 team earned a record of 36 wins and 5 losses. Their spectacular season ended with a tremendous effort in the championship game of the IHSA Class 3A State Finals. The Lady Railers lost in three close sets to Wheaton St. Francis. The scores were 23-25, 25-23 and 26-24.

The record-setting state team was led by an elite group of seniors that included Taryn Stoltzenburg, Becca Heitzig, Kloe Froebe, Arianna Morris, Jenna Bowman, Addy Qualters and Alyssa Company.

Lily Holmes, Lauren Tedrick, Peyton Sasse, Rebecca Burge and Makia Hassebrock remain from the state team on this year’s squad and against the Chargers Thursday night each one turned in a respectable performance.

Set one

The Chargers stepped out to a 5-2 lead but with Lily Holmes recording three kills early in the set, Lincoln was able to bring the game to a 9-9 tie. After Jayden Behrends put together back-to-back kills, Lincoln led 14-11 and never gave up the lead. An ace by Peyton Sasse increased the lead to 16-12. A kill by Rebecca Burge made the score 21-17. A few errors on Lincoln’s side allowed the Chargers to pull within a point, 22-21 the score. After a kill by the Chargers, the score was 23-22. Behrends was instrumental in preserving the win as she put down the final two kills of the set to seal the 25-22 victory.

Set two

Kills by Burge and Sasse put Lincoln in front 3-1 to start the second set. The Lady Railers ran off six consecutive points, taking a 9-2 lead, as Sasse and Holmes tallied kills and Lauren Tedrick served an ace. Makia Hassebrock was solid at the net with a tip and a kill to keep Lincoln in command with a 12-5 lead. An ace by Hassebrock further distanced the Chargers as Lincoln’s lead continued to grow, 16-7 the score. Holmes continued to swing really well versus the Chargers and she put down another kill for a 19-10 Lincoln lead. Behrends was also showing consistency and confidence for her first time on the Varsity roster and it was her kill that made the score 21-13. She would also edge the team closer to victory with an ace that made the score 24-14. The final point was earned when the Chargers committed a hitting error, giving Lincoln the 25-14 win.

Lincoln was led by Jayden Behrends with 6 kills.

Lily Holmes added 5 kills.

Lincoln evens their record at 1-1.
