Obituary
Jerry Ray Gemberling, 85, of Emden,
IL, passed away on Saturday, November 30, 2024, at
his home surrounded by his family.
Jerry was born October 1, 1939, in Cairo, IL, the
son of Ellis Russell Gemberling Sr. and Marion (Kirkbride)
Gemberling. He attended elementary school in Gideon,
MO, and Western Military Academy in Alton, IL,
before enrolling at Arkansas State University in
Jonesboro, AR. In the fall of 1958, he moved to
Illinois to farm the Gemberling family farm east of
Emden (which was established in 1876). He would
remain farming for the next 44 years before retiring
in 2003.
Jerry married Anita Marten on April 1, 1960, at St.
Peter's Lutheran Church in Emden. He and Anita were
longtime members of Zion United Methodist Church in
Emden until its closure, at which time they became
members of the First United Methodist Church in
Lincoln.
Jerry is survived by his wife, Anita; his 4
daughters, Annette (Dan) Tolbert of Diehlstadt, MO,
Faye (Randy) Schumann of Bloomington, IL, Susan
(Randy) Merick of Glen Allen, MO, and Gina (Steve)
Gemberling-Wibben of Little Rock, AR; his
grandchildren, Alyssa (Andrew) Hinds of Mt. Vernon,
IL, Garrett and Levi Alsup of Diehlstadt, MO, Ashley
and Josh Cline of Bloomington, IL, Hillary (David)
Crain of Clarksdale, MO, and Emily (Corey) Pratt of

He was preceded in death by his
parents.
Jerry enjoyed crappie fishing and family time at
their cabin on Lake Wappapello, MO. He loved
watching his daughters’ and grandchildren’s sporting
events, but not necessarily their dance recitals.
Jerry enjoyed “storytelling” at the local grain
elevators with his friends. He was patriotic and
took great pride displaying the US Flag on the
family farm. Jerry was an avid St. Louis Cardinals
Fan, but most of all, Jerry loved his family
immensely as a husband, father, and grandfather.
A memorial service will be held at 11:30 AM on
Saturday, December 7, 2024, at
Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in Lincoln.
Visitation will take place 2 hours prior to the
service from 9:30 to 11:30 AM also at the funeral
home. Burial will follow the service at Bethel
Cemetery in Emden. Memorial Donations may be made in
Jerry’s memory to the Bethel Church Fund, Emden Fire
and Rescue, or to the Donor’s Choice.
