Obituary
Darrell E. Knauer, 89, of Mt. Pulaski
passed away on Thursday, January 18, 2024 at Carle
BroMenn Medical Center in Normal, with his family by
his side.
Darrell was born on November 2, 1934, in St. Peter,
the son of William & Elnora (Storck) Knauer. He
married Mary Wachter on April 6, 1956, in Mt.
Pulaski.
Darrell is survived by his wife, Mary; his children,
Annette (Scott) Detwiler of Bloomington, and Kevin
(Monica) Knauer of Mt. Pulaski; his grandchildren,
Justin Knauer, Shawn Knauer, of Mt. Pulaski, and
Kimmy Detwiler of Bloomington; and his brothers,
Daris (Emma) Knauer & Dennis (Carol) Knauer of
Lincoln.
Darrell was preceded in death by his parents; his
daughter, Kim Knauer; and his brothers, Wallace &
Floyd Knauer.
Darrell was a member of Zion Lutheran Church of Mt.
Pulaski. He worked for 20 years at Mt. Pulaski High
School. He then worked for 20 years at Decatur
Holiday Inn and Conference Center and retired as
General Manager in 2000. He owned and operated Mt.
Pulaski Coin Laundry and co-owned Knauer Dairy Bar
with his wife, Mary.

He loved Mt. Pulaski and was very
active in the community. He helped plan many city
celebrations. He received a State of Illinois
Governor’s Award for his work on the IL
Sesquicentennial Celebration, he was involved with
the Looking for Lincoln Heritage Coalition and the
creation of the Mt. Pulaski Abraham Lincoln mural;
in 2012 he received the Casimir Pulaski Citizen
Award. He also served on the Mt. Pulaski City
Council and was very active in the Mt. Pulaski
Township Historical Museum.
Services for Darrell will be held at 10 a.m. on
Friday, January 26, 2024, at Zion Lutheran Church in
Mt. Pulaski, with Rev. Jonathan Buescher
officiating. Visitation will take place Thursday,
January 25, 2024, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. also at the
church. Burial will follow the services at Mt.
Pulaski Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made in Darrell’s name to
Zion Lutheran School, Vonderlieth Living Center, or
Mt. Pulaski Historical Society.
Services have been entrusted to
Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home, Mt. Pulaski.
