[February 06, 2024]  Pierre Engvall scored the go-ahead goal at 17:58 of the third period and the visiting New York Islanders defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs 3-2 on Monday night.

Engvall, a former Maple Leaf, scored his sixth goal of the season from close range after Brock Nelson kept the puck in the Toronto zone. The Maple Leafs, who had just tied the contest, failed to get the puck out of their end before the game-winning goal.

Mathew Barzal and Kyle MacLean also scored for the Islanders, who won all three games between the teams this season.

Ilya Sorokin stopped 35 shots as New York snapped a three-game slide.

John Tavares had a goal and an assist for the Maple Leafs, who had a three-game winning streak end. Mitchell Marner also scored, and Ilya Samsonov made 26 saves.

Barzal scored his 14th goal of the season at 10:31 of the first period on a rebound after Mike Reilly's shot rang off the post. Barzal's pass set up Reilly for his shot from the right faceoff circle. Anders Lee also earned an assist.

Marner tied the game 50 seconds into the second period from the slot with the teams playing four-on-four. Tavares made the pass, and Auston Matthews also had an assist.

New York regained the lead two minutes later when MacLean scored his first career NHL goal in his sixth game on a breakaway. After he left the penalty box, he was put into the clear by Cal Clutterbuck's pass and finished the play with a short backhand.

Matthews hit both goal posts with one shot in the first minute of the third period as Toronto applied pressure. Sorokin made a good save on Matthews near the midway point of the third.

New York's Oliver Wahlstrom hit a goal post at 14:09 of the third and took an interference penalty soon after.

Toronto tied the game on the ensuing power play when Tavares tipped in Morgan Rielly's shot at 15:12 of the third.
