Logan County Genealogical & Historical Society observes Abraham Lincoln’s birthday

Monday afternoon the Logan County Genealogical & historical society hosted an open house in celebration of Abraham Lincoln’s 215th birthday.

The 16th president claimed Illinois as his home prior to and after his election and move to the white house. Upon his death, Lincoln was transported back to Springfield for burial. The train that carried his body passed through his namesake town of Lincoln Illinois and crowds gathered near the current location of the historical society to pay their last respects to one of their beloved sons.

Abraham Lincoln had a huge impact on our country, but also on the town of Lincoln. It was Abraham Lincoln who helped to form the town and christened the town Lincoln with the juice from a watermelon.

Lincoln practiced law in Logan County and prior to that was a surveyor who mapped out the county and named it Logan after a dear friend of his.

The LCGHS has a wealth of information on the many generations of families that have called Logan County home, and a vast collection of genealogical data and statistics for those in search of their family history and roots.

But, the LCGHS also has a wealth of information about our 16th president, and the life he lived before he was elected as our nation’s leader.

On Monday, the Abraham Lincoln information was front and center throughout the LCGHS center. Guests were allowed the opportunity to see reprinted photos of the death train including a photo of Lincoln as he lay in state before his burial.

Members of the society were on hand to answer questions, offer information and assist guests in understanding the significance of Abraham Lincoln in our community.

In addition to all the information, the society offered refreshments for guests and were on hand to talk on other topics or assist anyone who might be curious about their own family lineage.
