The Hartsburg-Emden Stags lost to Cerro Gordo on Saturday afternoon but senior Evan Cross reached the elite milestone of scoring his 1,000th point in his basketball career. Cross reached this accomplishment with his first basket in the fourth quarter.

The Stags fell behind 20-8 in the first quarter.

The Stags outscored the Broncos in the second quarter, but still trailed 32-26 in the game at the half.

By the end of the third quarter Cerro Gordo was up 47-39.

Peyton Swinford scored all of his nine points in the fourth quarter, three 3s in fact, but combined with the six points from Cross it just wasn’t enough to overcome the deficit and win.

Cerro Gordo defeated the Stags by a final score of 63-54.

Evan Cross led the team with 24 points.

For the season Cross is averaging 19.0 points per game and 9.5 rebounds per game. He also averages 2.3 blocks per game.

Stags coach Rase Sherwood offered some comments about Evan Cross after he reached the 1,000 point club.

“Evan has played Varsity all four years,” said Sherwood. “I knew he had a personal goal to reach it this year, which meant he had to have 539 points this season. He had 25 points as a freshman, 120 points as a sophomore and 316 points as a junior. I knew that would be tough with two of our top scorers graduating last year (Will Wright and Rase Sherwood). He would be the main focus of every defense we faced this year. He has played strong all year and it was great to see him reach the goal with the help of teammates that looked to get him the ball a lot. Evan would be the first to tell you that he could not have reached it without his teammates.”
