[January 03, 2024] Going through the months of April, May, and June, I gravitated towards pictures that immediately brought me joy, spotlighted various milestones around Lincoln and sparked memories of meaningful moments in my life.

It just so happens that I mostly chose pictures of animals, but there is something so special to me about the bonds that can be created with creatures other than humans. It goes to show how far compassion, care, and kindness can take us. Pugs have been my favorite animal since I was a young child, so I had to choose a picture of every one that appeared in my chosen months.

The Logan County Pride Festival was a grand success and a wonderful example of our community’s ability to come together. Many of my loved ones were there in person and in spirit.

My favorite picture was a hard choice. I had a tie between the pictures of Jeff Cooper’s retirement party and my dogs at Pride; the people/pets in these photos mean so much to me and are huge aspects of my life. I had to give the win to Mr. Cooper, though. He is someone who changes people’s lives for the better, and I know almost all of my friends would agree with that. Mr. Cooper was one of the Heroes of 2023 in LDN’s Hometown Heroes Magazine, too!

The first photo in my lineup was when Lincoln Daily News got a new sign installed, which granted us an even bigger presence on the square. We have continued our hard work to modernize our paper, and a fresh logo on a new location was a huge advancement!

This lovely photo of Bill and Jean Gossett on their 74th wedding anniversary blew me away. Originally, I had just admired the endearing picture. Though after I got the chance to meet and spend time with them, the image grew to mean so much more. After over 74 years together, the Gossetts are still head over heels for each other, which is evident in their sweet smiles.

The little guy in this picture was feeling sassy! Originally, it was difficult for me to pick a favorite furry friend from the Central Bark opening, but when I saw this pug he stole my heart. I have two pugs of my own who crave attention at all times. I felt like this handsome man not only deserved more love, but would enjoy some more publicity.

It seems that while this little girl was focused on her shopping trip, the shepherd eyeing her cookie had other plans. I enjoyed imagining who really got to enjoy the treat, but I suppose that is up to interpretation.

The 2023 Pride Festival had a wonderful turn out. This big sign under a local church’s tent served as another medium for collaboration and understanding, which is not always easy for the LGBTQ+ community to find. Near the beginning of the celebration, six people had already responded in writing. Seeing the church and other businesses at the festival made me so grateful for our community’s growth.

My partner and I brought our pugs and another family member with us to enjoy the Pride Fest. It always brightens my time out when my girls and other people get to make each other’s day.

A family friend’s dog stole the show at Logan County Pride. Everyone in the photo couldn’t help but smile at the fashionable furry-friend. Seeing all the animal lovers was another highlight of that day.

This cow cutie, Norman made my day. I can only imagine how much brighter he made that celebration for everyone at the Summer Fling. My mom loves cows, and we would have been there just to meet him.

I remember being so excited about this event when my partner told me, but there was an age limit. I was upset and cried, “Why can’t I be silly at the safari?” I wanted to find some acceptable way to go, but I did not have any small child to take with me. I really wanted to hold all the animals, especially the armadillo.

Mr. Cooper finally got the royal treatment he deserved with his student thrown retirement party. I got a good laugh out of his gorgeous sash and tiara. It is quite the accomplishment to retire after over 23 years of teaching and on the way out, get surprised with a big party from students. This is a moment definitely worthy to be called a milestone. I would love to see how many of his former students would come to a cookout at a park or something of the sort.
