The
2024 8th Grade Logan County championship game between the West
Lincoln Broadwell Wolverines and the Delavan Panthers was a
barnburner, with the Panthers holding on to win 40-37. The
tournament was held at LCHS on January 18, 2024.
After the first quarter, Delavan was on top 16-11, with every
starter scoring for the Panthers. Grady Burrell led the way with two
3s for Delavan.
With 2:01 on the clock in the second quarter, Henry Stoltzenburg
scored in the lane and drew the foul for the Wolverines.
Stoltzenburg’s ‘and one’ put Lincoln in front with a 23-21 lead. The
Panthers would tie the game 23-23 just before heading into the
locker room at the half.
WLB was putting up a great effort against a very tall and talented
Delavan team, yet the Wolverines fell behind 32-29 at the end of the
third quarter. Delavan’s nine points scored in the third quarter
were all 3s.
With 4:44 remaining in the game the Wolverines were down 32-31 after
Stoltzenburg sank two technical foul shots. Stoltzenburg’s attempt
to put WLB in front looked good, as the spin move in the lane was
impressive but the ball hit the rim and fell into the hands of the
Panthers.
Around the 3:30 mark Stoltzenburg would do the spin
move in the paint again and this time his basket was good and WLB
was up 33-32. After the Panthers tied the game on a free throw,
Maddox Whiteman put WLB up 35-33 with his move towards the lane from
the right side with 2:58 left to play. Whiteman made a basket with
2:20 left, this time from the left side of the lane and WLB was on
top 37-33.
The Panthers got a three to close the gap to 37-36
just under the two minute mark. With 34.5 seconds left the Panthers
scored in the paint, taking over the lead 38-37. WLB would miss a
shot opportunity in their next possession. The Panthers regained
control of the ball and scored in the paint with 5.5 seconds left. A
last ditch effort by Stoltzenburg from about three-fourths the
length of the court fell just short and the Panthers won 40-37.
