[July 01, 2024]
Beginning
Tuesday July 2, 2024, construction will begin on a bridge northwest
of Atlanta near Union. The bridge carries County Highway 20 over
Sugar Creek and is located about 5 miles northwest of Atlanta and 2
miles east of Union on 2550th Street. The road will be closed to
traffic during construction, which will last until mid-September.
The existing bridge is 225 feet long and was built in 1978. The
bridge was constructed with concrete deck beams. Those beams have
developed structural cracks and need to be replaced.
The bridge deck will be completely removed. Minor repairs will be
made to the concrete piers. Riprap will be placed to control further
erosion. New concrete deck beams and new guardrail will be
installed. A new asphalt overlay will be placed over the bridge.
The project was awarded to County Contractors, Inc. located in
Quincy, Illinois. The low bid on the project was $1,032,725. The
cost will be paid with a combination of federal bridge funds and
local property tax funds.
