Argentina's Maria Lourdes Carle lost the first set, then
dominated eighth-seeded Tatjana Maria of Germany 5-7, 6-1, 6-1
in the first round in Italy.
Ranked 93rd in the world, Carle converted 7 of 13 (53.8 percent)
of her break-point opportunities, to 3 of 7 (42.9 percent) for
Maria.
Fourth-seeded Diane Parry of France rebounded to defeat
Australia's Olivia Gadecki 4-6, 6-4, 6-4. Fifth-seeded Arantxa
Rus of the Netherlands also needed three sets to oust Italy's

France's Chloe Paquet defeated China's Saisai Zheng, Australian
Ajla Tomljanovic rallied past Egypt's Mayar Sherif and Croatia's
Petra Martic swept Colombia's Emiliana Arango.
No. 1 seed Qinwen Zheng of China, seventh-seeded Romanian
Jaqueline Cristian, Italy's Lucia Bronzetti and Ann Li of the
United States also won on Tuesday. Li upset countrywoman and No.
3 seed Peyton Stearns 3-6, 7-6 (7), 6-2, saving one match point
in the second-set tiebreaker.
