Menard
County 4-H members showed 85 live animal exhibits at the Menard
County Fair and 60 general project exhibits during a show held at
the Sangamon County Fairgrounds in New Berlin on June 29-30.
Every year 4-H members select projects that interest them in the
categories of Animal Science, Creative Arts, Environmental Sciences,
Civic Engagement, Food Systems, Healthy Living, Career Leadership,
and Science/Technology/Engineering/Math. After choosing a project,
members learn about that topic on their own and then demonstrate
what they have learned by exhibiting their work in the county 4-H
shows.
“New for 2024, all Menard County 4-H Exhibitors
received a free show shirt featuring the message ‘Growing Menard
County Together’,” said Stacie Skelton, Menard County 4-H Program
Coordinator. “Thank you to a private local donor, the Menard County
Farm Bureau and Menard County 4-H for making this gift possible.”

Twelve 4-H members from Menard County will exhibit
their general project work at the Illinois State Fair in the Orr
Building on Saturday, August 10. The public is welcome to view these
exhibits throughout the day alongside the very best exhibits from
other counties across the state. Local 4-H members will also be
participating in the Junior Livestock shows during the Illinois
State Fair. To learn more about the opportunities available to local
youth through the 4-H program, visit extension.illinois.edu/lms/4-h-youth-development.
ABOUT ILLINOIS 4-H: Illinois 4-H is the flagship
youth development program of University of Illinois Extension and
administered through the College of Agriculture, Consumer, and
Environmental Sciences. 4-H grows true leaders, youth who are
empowered for life today and prepared for a career tomorrow. The
hands-on approach in 4-H gives young people guidance, tools and
encouragement, and then puts them in the driver’s seat to make great
things happen. Independent research confirms the unparalleled impact
of the 4-H experience, demonstrating that young people are four
times more likely to contribute to their communities; two times more
likely to make healthier choices; two times more likely to be
civically active; and two times more likely to participate in STEM
programs.
ABOUT EXTENSION: Illinois Extension leads public outreach for
University of Illinois by translating research into action plans
that allow Illinois families, businesses, and community leaders to
solve problems, make informed decisions, and adapt to changes and
opportunities.
