Obituary
Helen L. Maaks, beloved mother and
grandmother, passed away on July 26, 2024, in the
comfort of her own home. She was born on February 4,
1930, in rural Lincoln, a daughter to Herman &
Matilda (Boerger) Schmidt. She was the last
surviving member of her family.
Helen attended grade school in a one-room
schoolhouse, Rothchild School, and graduated from
Lincoln High School in 1948. After graduation, she
became employed with the Logan County Title Company
until 1958. She changed occupations to become a
farmer's wife when she married Dean Maaks on August
24, 1958. This marriage was blessed with four
children, Darla (Larry) Stanfield, Donita (Terry)
Biggs, Derald (April) Maaks, and Deanna (Joel)
Jacobs, all of Lincoln. From those unions came six
grandchildren, Lauren (Caleb) DeJarnette, Lance
Stanfield, Devin Biggs, David Biggs, Derek Jacobs,
and Jordan Jacobs. She is also survived by two
sisters-in-law, Diane (Neil) Steffens and Betty
Schmidt.
A member of Zion Lutheran Church, Helen taught
Sunday School for 40+ years. She was also a member
of their Quilting Guild. |
Helen worked on the farm by her
husband's side until they retired in 1997. She
always found joy in simple things such as picking a
ripe tomato from her garden, looking at her flowers
in bloom, completing a jigsaw puzzle, or working on
some type of handiwork. She loved her "furry
friends" and appreciated the companionship they
gave.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband,
Dean; one brother, Ralph H. Schmidt; and two
sisters, Frances who died in infancy, and Lenora
Bargfrede.
A visitation for Helen will be held on Friday,
August 2, 2024, from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. at
Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in Lincoln.
Funeral services will be Saturday, August 3, 2024,
at 10 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church, Lincoln with
interment at Richmond Grove Cemetery, New Holland.
Memorials may be made in Helen’s name to Zion
Lutheran Sunday School or the Humane Society of
Logan County.
