[June 07, 2024]   On Thursday, June 6, the Whistle Stop Library in Emden kicked off it summer program with a history of cars.

Inside the library, Ladonna Gass had a table set up with different makes and models of both antique and modern cars. Gass shared facts about each of the cars and then read a book with other interesting information.

One of the model cars was a 1956 Chevy Belair, which Gass said had only two doors. The seat had to be pulled forward to allow passengers to crawl in back.

After talking about the cars, Gass asked true/false questions such as whether a car can reach a speed of 199 miles per hour. Though 199 mph seems unbelievable, sport cars like Porsches and Corvettes can actually reach that speed.

When kids got a question right, they could win candy and other prizes. Chips and drinks were also available.

Outside, Earl Gass had little race tracks set up. As kids raced the cars around the track, he timed how long it took for the cars to go a lap. They could win more prizes for sharing the time.

Next Thursday from 2-5 p.m. Ladonna said the program will be about dog breeds. She plans to set up a table with dog figurines. For a game, Gass will lay out cards and have the kids see if they can match up the card to one of the dog figurines.
