Obituary
Mary Ellen Butler, 89, a Hoosier from
birth, formerly of Indianapolis, Scottsburg, IN,
Sarasota, FL, and finally Lincoln, IL, passed from
this life on May 31, 2024. She was born in Harrison
County, IN, to her parents Millard Logan Jackson and
Mary Bigler Jackson on December 7, 1934. She
graduated from Hardinsburg High School at the age of
16. She married her husband John David Butler on
March 5, 1955 and together they shared 63 years of
marriage.
She began her secretarial career,
needing a work permit at the age of 16, in
Louisville, KY, working for United Mercantile
Agencies. When she turned 18, she moved to
Indianapolis to work for RCA Records. After a hiatus
from the work force to raise her children, she
returned to work for Wolcott Printing Press and then
Wavetek.
She was a member of Indian Creek
Christian Church in Indianapolis, then Sarasota
Christian Church in Sarasota, FL, then First
Christian Church in Scottsburg, IN, and finally
attended Elkhart Christian Church in Elkhart, IL.
She and John bought 5 acres of land
on the south side of Indianapolis where they built a
home, raised their children, and enjoyed a small
farm life, raising their own beef and tending a
one-acre garden. Mary enjoyed bowling, playing
cards, traveling to all 50 states, and taking care
of those in her care.
She is survived by her four children:
Brenda (Bobby) Heeringa of Osprey, FL, J.D. (Pam)
Butler of Hamilton, NJ, Mary Ann (Bob) Rea of
Lincoln, IL, and Barbie (Skip) Hunefeld of
Scottsburg, IN; her twelve grandchildren: Emily
(Anthony) Cox, Stephanie (Paul) Kliewer, Lindsay
Butler, David Heeringa, Meghan Butler, Hannah Rea,
Bethany (Gary) Rademaker, Matt (Riley) Butler, Sara
Campbell, Isaac Hunefeld, Eli Hunefeld, and Leah
Hunefeld; and ten great-grandchildren: Jaden, Tyson,
and Brennan Kliewer, Braxton, Milah, Raelyn and
Hendrix Hunefeld, Lillian and Barrett Rademaker, and
Charlotte Jo Butler. |
A visitation for Mary will be held on
Wednesday, June 19, at Forest Lawn Funeral Home in
Greenwood, IN, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. with
the funeral service to follow at 12:30 p.m.
Burial will immediately follow at
Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.
