(The Center Square) – An Illinois woman has written a book about bucket list items to see and do in the Land of Lincoln.

“100 Things to Do in Illinois Before You Die” is published by Reedy Press.

Author Melanie Holmes said she wasn’t planning to write a guide book but became aware of Reedy Press’s series and decided there needed to be a book about her home state.

The book is divided into five chapters, including food and drink, music and entertainment, sports and rec, culture and history, and shopping and fashion. She said she has experienced a majority of the activities mentioned in the book.

“I have done 84, but I always tell people I included things for thrill seekers such as jumping out of an airplane and I’m never going to do that,” said Holmes.

Holmes said one of her favorite things to do is to visit the zoological park in Hanna City.

“I love going to Wildlife Prairie Park outside of Peoria where you can play all day, see the animals, then check into a train caboose that you can sleep in overnight,” said Holmes.

Some of the other locations mentioned in the book include Superman’s hometown of Metropolis, Garden of the Gods in southern Illinois, Arsenal Island in the Quad Cities, and the Cahokia Mounds and Dickson Mounds State Museum.

Holmes said there are also suggestions for disabled individuals and people on the autism spectrum.

Holmes will be taking part in a book signing event Tuesday, July 23, at the El Paso Public Library.
