The Lincoln Railsplitters season opener on Tuesday afternoon at Mike Curry Field was postponed due to darkness after the game was tied 8-8 in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Lincoln was playing the Bloomington Purple Raiders in what was an absolutely perfect start, weather-wise, to the season. Sunny and 70 degrees in March at the ball field ~ it just doesn’t get any better than that.

Wyatt Mammen started the game on the mound for Lincoln and he allowed one run in the top of the second inning.

Bloomington held a 1-0 lead until the bottom of the fourth inning.

The Railsplitters scored five times in the bottom of the fourth inning. Two walks and a single in the inning helped Lincoln plate the first run. Ashton Corley drove in the tying run with a single to centerfield. Wes Tedrick scored that first run of the season for Lincoln. Tedrick was pinch running for the catcher, Griffin Shaw. Following Corley’s single, Colbie Glenn smacked a double to left field. Glenn’s solid hit scored Karson Komnick and Corley with the go-ahead runs. Komnick was pinch running for Mammen. With two outs in the inning, Trey Schilling reached on an error by the third baseman and took second base on the bad throw. This allowed Glenn to come racing home with another run for Lincoln. Brenden Wurth’s line drive single to left field scored Schilling with the fifth run of the game.

The Purple Raiders scored a run on a fielder’s choice in the top of the fifth inning.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Lincoln was able to earn that run back as Corley tripled and Glenn drove him home with a single.

The 6-2 lead was intact until the top of the seventh inning.

With Glenn on the mound, he found himself in a little trouble with two walks and two hit by pitches. After a run-scoring fielder’s choice and a double and a single that plated runs, Lincoln was on the losing end, 8-6 the score.

Moving to the bottom of the seventh inning, Tedrick walked to start the inning. Corley’s double to center field scored Tedrick and then on a 1-2 count Glenn sent a line drive to left field for a run-scoring double and all of a sudden it was a tie ballgame. With one out, Schilling was intentionally walked. The next batter, Wurth, also walked to load the bases for Jarrett Evers.

Baseball fans are left hanging for now.

The game was suspended due to darkness with one out and the bases loaded.

Lincoln did have 11 hits versus the Purple Raiders.

Colbie Glenn was 3-for-4 with four RBIs and a run scored.

Brenden Wurth was 3-for-3 with an RBI and two walks.

Ashton Corley was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBIs. Corley was a home run shy of the cycle. Great start to the season for Lincoln’s right fielder.

Griffin Shaw added a single and Drew Hayes smacked a double to complete the Railsplitters offense.

Wyatt Mammen was outstanding in his season debut on the mound. He faced 18 batters, striking out six and walking three. He allowed just two hits and one earned run in four innings of work. Of the 70 pitches Mammen tossed, 41 were for strikes.

Colbie Glenn moved from center field to the mound in the fifth inning. Glenn struck out three batters and walked five. He gave up four hits and seven earned runs, while working two and two-thirds innings. Glenn threw 82 pitches and 43 were for strikes.

Ashton Corley recorded the final out in the top of the seventh inning for Lincoln. After four pitches, he induced a groundout to retire the Purple Raiders.

Lincoln will return to action today at 4:30 p.m. at Mike Curry Field versus the Tri-Valley Vikings.
