Spring training roundup: Casey Mize, Tigers cruise past Yanks 7-0

 

[March 15, 2024]  Casey Mize outpitched Marcus Stroman as the Detroit Tigers rolled to a 7-0 victory over the visiting New York Yankees in spring training action Thursday in Lakeland, Fla.

Mize (2-1) allowed two hits, walked two and struck out four over four innings, while Stroman (0-2) gave up five runs (four earned) and seven hits with three walks and four whiffs in 4 1/3 innings.

Kerry Carpenter paced Detroit's offense, going 2-for-3 with two runs and three RBIs, including his first spring homer. The Tigers' bullpen allowed just one hit over five innings.

Rays 3, Braves 1

Zack Littell tossed five shutout innings, allowing just one hit and striking out six, as Tampa Bay held host Atlanta's bats in check in North Port, Fla.

Isaac Paredes and Richie Palacios delivered RBI hits to back Littell (1-0), who hasn't allowed a run in 10 innings this spring.

Atlanta starter Chris Sale (0-2) took the loss, yielding two runs and three hits while walking one and striking out six over 3 1/3 innings. Kade Kern drove in the Braves' lone run with an RBI single while reigning National League MVP Ronald Acuna Jr. (knee) returned to the lineup for the first time since Feb. 29 and went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts.

Phillies 6, Red Sox 1

Starter Ranger Suarez and six relievers shut down visiting Boston while recording 11 strikeouts in Clearwater, Fla.

Suarez (2-0) yielded one hit, walked four and struck out five in his 3 2/3 innings of work. Whit Merrifield finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs as the Phillies took a six-run lead after four innings.

Red Sox starter Josh Winckowski (0-1) was touched for six runs (five earned) on eight hits in 3 2/3 innings. Jamie Westbrook's first spring homer produced the visitors' lone run.

Blue Jays 5, Twins 1

Bowden Francis delivered six sharp innings, allowing just an unearned run, and Toronto grabbed an early lead en route to a win over host Minnesota in Fort Myers, Fla.

Brian Serven's two-run homer in the second backed Francis (2-1), who gave up four hits and struck out two with no walks.

For Minnesota, starter Bailey Ober (1-1) was charged with three runs (two earned) over 2 2/3 innings. Edouard Julien's went 2-for-3 with RBI single that plated the Twins' run.

Mets 0, Cardinals 0

Starters Jose Butto and Lance Lynn each tossed four strong innings as New York and host St. Louis played to scoreless tie in Jupiter, Fla.

Butto yielded two hits and two walks with three strikeouts for the Mets, while Lynn gave up just one hit and fanned four with no walks. The pitching staffs combined for 23 strikeouts (14 for New York, nine for St. Louis).

Zack Short collected two of the Mets' three hits.

Orioles 5, Pirates 2

Kyle Stowers hit a three-run homer to highlight a four-run seventh inning as Baltimore topped Pittsburgh in Bradenton, Fla.

Orioles starter Grayson Rodriguez gave up four hits and two runs in 4 1/3 innings. Craig Kimbrel (1-0) pitched a scoreless sixth inning for the win and Nick Vespi struck out five in two innings to earn the save.

Mariners left-hander Marco Gonzales struck out four and gave up one run and one hit in five innings. Ryan Borucki (0-1) gave up the three-run blast to Stowers and took the loss.

White Sox 5, Angels 1

Michael Soroka (1-0) struck out five and gave up two hits in four scoreless innings to lead Chicago past Los Angeles in Phoenix.

Andrew Vaughn had two hits and two RBIs, and Chuckie Robinson also had two hits for the White Sox.

Angels starter Tyler Anderson (1-2) gave up three runs and four hits in 3 2/3 innings for the Angels, who were held to five hits.

Guardians 13, Rockies 7

Cleveland hit four homers and finished with 16 hits in its lopsided win over Colorado in Goodyear, Ariz.

Lorenzo Cedrola, Raynel Delgado, David Fry and Will Brennan each homered, and Guardians starter Logan Allen (1-1) gave up one run and two hits in 3 1/3 innings, striking out three.

Alan Trejo homered and drove in four for the Rockies. Starter Peter Lambert (1-1) gave up five runs and seven hits in 3 1/3 innings to take the loss.

Cubs 3, Athletics 1

Starter Shota Imanaga (2-1) struck out nine and gave up three hits in 4 1/3 shutout innings as Chicago edged Oakland in Mesa, Ariz.

David Bote hit a solo homer in the eighth inning to provide some insurance for the Cubs. Edwin Escobar gave up one hit in a scoreless ninth to earn the save.

Starter JP Sears (2-1) gave up two runs and five hits for the Cubs, who were limited to six singles.

Royals 6, Diamondbacks 0

Bobby Witt Jr., Nick Pratto and Drew Walters each had two hits as Kansas City blanked Arizona in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Starter Michael Wacha (1-0) allowed no runs and struck out four in 3 2/3 innings for the Royals, who won despite going 4-for-15 with runners in scoring position.

Lourdes Gurriel Jr. had two of the Diamondbacks' four hits. Starter Tommy Henry (0-3) gave up five runs and six hits in 2 2/3 innings.

Mariners 4, Brewers 2

Mitch Hanniger and Cal Raleigh each hit their third homers of the spring and Luis Urias added a solo shot to help Seattle top Milwaukee in Peoria, Ariz.

Mariners starter Bryan Woo struck out five in four shutout innings. Trent Thornton (1-1) gave up a solo homer to Eric Haase in the fifth but earned the win. Jhonathan Diaz gave up three hits, including a solo homer to Gary Sanchez in the ninth, but struck out four in two innings to earn the save.

Brewers starter Robert Gasser struck out five and gave up one run on three hits in four innings. Elvis Peguero (1-1) gave up two runs and three hits in one inning to take the loss.

Nationals 5, Astros 3

Joey Meneses went 3-for-4 with an RBI to lead Washington past Houston In Palm Beach, Fla.

Nationals starter Zach Davies (2-1) gave up two runs, one walk and seven hits in five innings, striking out five. Joe La Sorsa struck out two and gave up one hit in a scoreless ninth for his fourth save of the spring.

Jake Meyers hit a solo homer in the sixth inning for the Astros. Brandon Bielak (0-2) allowed four hits and three runs in three innings.

Rangers 7, Reds 4

Jon Gray fired five shutout innings as host Texas topped Cincinnati in Surprise, Ariz.

Gray (2-0) yielded three hits and no walks while striking out three. Wyatt Langford paced the Rangers' offense with a fourth-inning grand slam.

Miguel Hernandez and Allan Cerda went deep for the Reds. Fernando Cruz fanned four in two scoreless, hitless innings.
