[March 19, 2024]    Luke Martin hit a walk-off home run on Tuesday afternoon in Mount Pulaski as the Hilltoppers defeated Nokomis 5-3.

Martin’s blast to right field came on a 2-2 count with Chance Payne on base, breaking the 3-3 tie and giving Mount Pulaski their second win of the season.

Nokomis took a 2-0 lead over the Hilltoppers in the second inning with Martin on the mound.

Mount Pulaski scored three runs in the bottom of the second inning to take over the lead. After a leadoff walk to Martin, Tyler Cross crushed a triple to right field to drive in the first Hilltoppers run. Carter Clark tied the game on a single to right that scored Cross. With two outs in the inning, Liam Smith singled to left to score Clark with the go-ahead run.

The 3-2 lead stuck until the top of the sixth inning, when Nokomis scored the tying run after a walk and three consecutive hit batters. A coach’s nightmare.

Chance Payne pitched the top of the seventh inning in relief and allowed a single in the midst of striking out three batters.

Mount Pulaski began the bottom of the seventh inning with a ground out before Payne singled to left, giving Martin the opportunity to be the hero. Martin’s two-run shot was the first walk-off home run of his high school career. Chances are it won’t be the last for the sophomore.

Chance Payne (2-0) picked up the win in relief for Mount Pulaski. He worked one inning and struck out three batters.

Luke Martin started the game and worked five innings, allowing two runs on five hits. Only one run was earned. He struck out six and walked three.

Liam Smith pitched two-thirds of an inning, giving up one run and walking one batter.

Eric Cooper pitched one-third of an inning, recording one strikeout.

Mount Pulaski had eight hits versus Nokomis pitchers.

Eric Cooper, Liam Smith, Landon Smith, Chance Payne, Luke Martin, Tyler Cross, Carter Clark and Aaron Volle each had hits.

Mount Pulaski (2-0) will play at Pawnee on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
