Mount Pulaski scored three runs in the bottom
of the second inning to take over the lead. After a leadoff walk
to Martin, Tyler Cross crushed a triple to right field to drive
in the first Hilltoppers run. Carter Clark tied the game on a
single to right that scored Cross. With two outs in the inning,
Liam Smith singled to left to score Clark with the go-ahead run.
The 3-2 lead stuck until the top of the sixth inning, when
Nokomis scored the tying run after a walk and three consecutive
hit batters. A coach’s nightmare.
Chance Payne pitched the top of the seventh inning in relief and
allowed a single in the midst of striking out three batters.
Mount Pulaski began the bottom of the seventh inning with a
ground out before Payne singled to left, giving Martin the
opportunity to be the hero. Martin’s two-run shot was the first
walk-off home run of his high school career. Chances are it
won’t be the last for the sophomore.
Chance Payne (2-0) picked up the win in relief for Mount
Pulaski. He worked one inning and struck out three batters.
Luke Martin started the game and worked five innings, allowing
two runs on five hits. Only one run was earned. He struck out
six and walked three.
Liam Smith pitched two-thirds of an inning, giving up one run
and walking one batter.
Eric Cooper pitched one-third of an inning, recording one
strikeout.
Mount Pulaski had eight hits versus Nokomis pitchers.
Eric Cooper, Liam Smith, Landon Smith, Chance Payne, Luke
Martin, Tyler Cross, Carter Clark and Aaron Volle each had hits.
Mount Pulaski (2-0) will play at Pawnee on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
