The Hilltoppers scored two runs in the top of
the first inning. Eric Cooper and Liam Smith got on base with a
single and double, respectively. Cooper scored on an infield fly
call when the ball was dropped by the second baseman. Tyler
Cross drove in another run on a base hit.
Mount Pulaski led 2-0 in the first inning.
Martin’s home run in the third inning came on an 0-2 count. His
blast to left field put the Hilltoppers up 3-0.
In the top of the fourth inning Mount Pulaski got a lead-off
walk to Carter Clark and then Preston Cowan reached base on a
bunt single. Liam Smith drove in Clark with a single. Landon
Smith grounded into a fielder’s choice to score Cowan. Martin
added a sacrifice fly to score another run. Tucker Fitzpatrick
scored a run on a wild pitch and the Hilltoppers lead grew to
7-0.
In the top of the sixth inning Mount Pulaski scored four times,
getting a little help from Pawnee pitching. After one out, three
Hilltoppers walked to load the bases. Cross then singled to
plate the first run of the inning. Aaron Volle followed with a
sacrifice fly to score a run. Finally, it was Clark with the
double to right to drive home two more runs and the score was
11-0.
Landon Smith went the distance for Mount Pulaski, earning the
win in six innings. Smith tossed the shutout by allowing only
four hits. He struck out eight and walked two. He threw 85
pitches and 57 were for strikes.
The Hilltoppers were led by Liam Smith, Tyler Cross and Preston
Cowan, who each had two hits.
Liam Smith was 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI.
Cross was 2-for-2 with two RBIs, two walks and a run scored.
Cowan was 2-for-4 with a run scored.
Eric Cooper, Luke Martin and Carter Clark each had one hit.
Riley McElroy took the loss for Pawnee.
Mount Pulaski improved to 3-0.
The Hilltoppers will play at Williamsville today at 4:30 p.m.
