Mount Pulaski shuts out Athens 10-0 on Senior Night
Smith and Selinger combine to drive in six runs

The Mount Pulaski Hilltoppers honored two outstanding seniors on Wednesday night as the team earned win no. 20 on the season.

Seniors Colt Selinger and Landon Smith were recognized along with their parents before the game with Athens.

Landon Smith was the designated hitter, batting lead-off and going 2-for-4 with three RBIs.

Selinger was 1-for-1 with a run scored and three RBIs. He had two sacrifice flies.

Luke Martin tossed the shutout for Mount Pulaski. He was terrific in six innings, striking out 11 batters. He allowed five hits and two walks. Martin threw 93 pitches and 60 were for strikes.

Mount Pulaski plated four runs in the bottom of the second inning. A bases-loaded walk to Aaron Volle scored the first run. Selinger’s sacrifice fly with two outs scored the second Mount Pulaski run. Landon Smith drove in another run with a single to right. Another bases loaded walk made the score 4-0. The Warriors issued three walks in the inning.

The Hilltoppers put four more runs on the board in the bottom of the third inning. Volle’s bunt single scored Eric Cooper. Selinger smashed a line drive to left to drive in another run. Landon Smith’s double to center drove in two more runs and Mount Pulaski enjoyed an 8-0 lead.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Tyler Cross laced a line drive to right, scoring Cooper, and the lead was now 9-0.

The Hilltoppers got the job done in the bottom of the sixth inning when Selinger’s sacrifice fly made the score 10-0. Liam Smith’s double to start the inning was followed by a single by Cross and with runners at the corners, the senior delivered and it was an early night for the Hilltoppers.

Mount Pulaski had 11 hits versus Athens.

Landon Smith, Eric Cooper, Liam Smith and Tyler Cross each had two hits.

Chance Payne, Aaron Volle and Colt Selinger each had one hit.

Mount Pulaski improved to 20-1 on the season.

The Hilltoppers play at Illini Bluffs today at 4:30 p.m.
