Mount Pulaski had just three hits in the game,
but with Tri-City issuing eight walks and committing three
errors, the Hilltoppers were on the board early with five runs.
In the first inning Mount Pulaski scored three times without
recording a hit. Payne hit a sacrifice fly to score a run,
Franklin Wade scored on a wild pitch and Tucker Fitzpatrick
scored on a passed ball.
The second inning started with Aaron Volle and Preston Cowan
getting hit by pitches. Landon Smith drove in Volle with a
single. Luke Martin hit a sacrifice fly to bring in another run,
making the score 5-0.
The game was quiet until the bottom of the fifth inning, when
Payne led off with a solo home run to right field. After Luke
Martin singled, he advanced to third on an error by the
Tornadoes pitcher. Martin scored on Eric Cooper’s sacrifice fly
to make the score 7-0.
Four walks, an error and a wild pitch told the story in the
bottom of the sixth inning as Mount Pulaski scored three more
runs. The Hilltoppers win via the ten-run rule and improve their
record to 21-1.
Eric Cooper (5-0) earned the win for Mount Pulaski. He worked
six innings and allowed two hits, one walk and struck out nine
batters.
Mount Pulaski will play at Havana on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.
