Chance Payne (7-0) pitched the complete
seven-inning shutout. He was outstanding on the mound, allowing
just two hits and striking out eight batters. He walked four
while facing 24 batters. He threw 107 pitches and 63 were for
strikes.
Mount Pulaski had four hits in the game. Liam Smith had one of
those hits in the third inning, driving in a run to make the
score 2-0. Mount Pulaski scored the first run earlier in the
inning on an error. That all took place last week.
Jumping ahead to Wednesday night, the Hilltoppers took a 3-0
lead in the fifth inning on a walk, a single by Luke Martin and
a ground out by Eric Cooper.
Payne’s defense behind him was terrific. After allowing a lead
off walk in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Hilltoppers
executed a double play to erase that scoring threat. The last
batter flew out to Colt Selinger in right and Mount Pulaski hung
on for the 3-0 win.
Landon Smith, Chance Payne, Luke Martin and Liam Smith each had
a hit for the Hilltoppers.
Chris Drake was the losing pitcher for Illini Bluffs.
Mount Pulaski will host El Paso-Gridley today at 4:30 p.m.
