Los Angeles starting pitcher Griffin Canning
(2-4) allowed one run on five hits and three walks in six
innings. He struck out five.
Paul Goldschmidt homered for the Cardinals, whose three-game
winning streak ended.
St. Louis starter Lance Lynn (1-2) gave up four runs on eight
hits in five innings. He fanned five and walked two.
The Angels broke out to a 4-0 first-inning lead. Schanuel jumped
on Lynn's third pitch of the game for a homer down the right
field line.
Luis Guillorme hit a single and scored on Calhoun's one-out
double. Calhoun took third base on a throwing error and scored
on Kevin Pillar's infield single.
Pillar stole second base, moved to third on a flyout and scored
on a wild pitch.
Guillorme and Ward singled to open the third inning. After they
moved up on a groundout, Lynn hit Pillar with a pitch to load
the bases before retiring the next two batters to escape.
Lynn capped his evening by dodging danger again in the fifth
inning. Guillorme walked and went to third on Calhoun's one-out
single, but Lynn struck out Pillar and Logan O'Hoppe to end the
threat.
Goldschmidt's leadoff homer in the sixth inning cut the
Cardinals' deficit to 4-1. However, Neto got that run back in
the bottom of the inning with his homer off reliever Nick
Robertson.
Los Angeles upped its lead to 7-1 in the seventh inning. Ward
homered, Calhoun smacked a double, Pillar singled and Mickey
Moniak delivered an RBI single.
St. Louis cut the deficit to 7-2 in the eighth when Alec
Burleson doubled and scored on Brendan Donovan's single.
