Mount Pulaski wins game one of Regionals

The Hilltoppers started the postseason on Wednesday as game one of the regionals got underway versus Cerro Gordo/Bement.

Mount Pulaski won 15-0 over the Broncos in four innings.

Eric Cooper set the tone with the first pitch, smacking it to center for a double. After Liam Smith was hit by a pitch, Chance Payne cranked a triple to center to score Cooper and Smith. The next four Hilltoppers in the lineup each walked and the score quickly reached 4-0. The Broncos got a double play to end the inning.

Mount Pulaski scored again in the second inning on a single by Landon Smith.

The Hilltoppers broke the game open in the third inning by scoring seven runs. Aaron Volle and Tyler Cross each drove in runs with singles. Payne also added a sacrifice fly to score a run. Three walks and two errors in the inning also allowed Mount Pulaski to run out to a 12-0 lead.

The Broncos were wild on the mound in the fourth inning, giving up two walks early before Liam Smith and Payne singled in runs. Mount Pulaski scored on a wild pitch to end the game with the score 15-0.

Eric Cooper earned the win for Mount Pulaski. He worked four innings, giving up just one hit and walking one. He struck out eight Broncos.

Chance Payne led Mount Pulaski at the plate. He was 3-for-3 with four RBIs and two runs scored.

Liam Smith was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and an RBI.

Eric Cooper, Landon Smith, Tyler Cross and Aaron Volle also had hits for the Hilltoppers.

Mount Pulaski improved their record to 24-3.

The Hilltoppers will play for the regional championship at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday at Decatur St. Teresa.

Mount Pulaski will play the winner of the Decatur St. Teresa/Argenta-Oreana game.
