New York sluggers Aaron Judge and Giancarlo
Stanton hit long solo homers in the first and sixth innings,
respectively. Including the postseason, the Yankees are 35-4
when the pair homer in the same game.
Judge hit a 433-foot drive into the second deck in left field to
give the Yankees a 1-0 lead against Chicago starter Mike
Clevinger (0-2). Stanton later lifted a 417-foot shot into the
left field seats off Tanner Banks for a 4-1 lead.
Judge drew three walks after hitting his 12th homer, and he
scored on a double by Alex Verdugo in the fourth that snapped a
1-1 tie. Stanton added an RBI double off the top of the center
field wall immediately after Verdugo's hit.
Cortes (2-4) produced New York's third straight start without an
earned run allowed. He gave up a tying RBI single to Andrew
Vaughn in the third inning, two batters after Zach Remillard
reached on a throwing error by third baseman Oswaldo Cabrera.
Cortes allowed five hits, struck out six and issued one walk in
a 93-pitch outing. He improved his career record to 13-3 in the
Bronx after struggling through 5 1/3 innings during a 7-2 loss
at Tampa Bay on May 11.
Clevinger gave up three runs on five hits in 4 2/3 innings. He
struck out five and walked two.
Tommy Pham had three of Chicago's eight hits, including a
leadoff double in the eighth when Judge tried to make a diving
catch in center field. Vaughn then delivered an RBI single off
Ian Hamilton, who also allowed a double to pinch hitter Gavin
Sheets before being lifted.
Caleb Ferguson recorded the final two outs of the eighth, and
Clay Holmes tossed a hitless ninth inning for his 13th save.
