Obituary
Essie L. Usherwood went home to be
with her Lord and Savior on May 9, 2024. She
courageously battled Parkinson’s Disease for many
years. Although it crippled her body, the disease
never crippled her love, joy, or spirit.
Essie was born August 31, 1936, in Southern
Illinois. She married Scott Cordes, who passed away
from an auto accident shortly after their wedding.
Essie later married John W. Usherwood. Essie
Usherwood worked at Bartman’s Nursing Home and later
at Lincoln Developmental Center until her
retirement.
Essie’s life was her family. She lovingly raised
four children, Lori (Rick) Howerton, John (Kayla)
Usherwood, Julie (Jim) Hendrick, and Melanie (Jon)
Wright. Her love for her children was matched only
by her love for her grandchildren, Jared (Bridget)
Howerton, Zach (Alisha) Howerton, Isaac Howerton,
Katie Wright, Jessica Heidebrink, Alison Wright,
Shelby (Tim) Usherwood, Justin (Megan) Heidebrink,
Melissa Wright, Joshua Wright, Jonathan S. Wright,
and Will Wright. Essie was also blessed with
great-grandchildren, Mila, Hayes, Atlys, Marlowe,
P.J., and Piper. |
Essie was preceded in death by her
parents, Arlee and Lela Stephens; her sisters, Marie
and Dorothy; her brother, Sid; her daughter, Lori;
and her son, John.
Essie will be missed greatly but warm
memories will always linger, reminding her family of
the blessing of her life. Above all, her family
rejoices knowing Essie’s eternal life with Christ
has begun and that her departure is not goodbye but
rather see you soon.
Services for Essie will be held at 11 a.m. on
Friday, May 17, 2024, at Fricke-Calvert-Schrader
Funeral Home in Lincoln. Visitation will take place
one hour prior from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., also at the
funeral home. Burial will follow the service at
Mason City Cemetery.
Memorials may be made in Essie’s name to her
daughter, Julie Heidebrink, to assist with Miss
Essie’s Legacy Fund to help single mothers raise
their children.
