In
1998 he attended auctioneering school in Missouri between his
sophomore and junior year of college. It was a nine-day crash course
in all things auctioneering. Dan learned the basics, his chant,
filler words, tongue twisters, and number drills. An auctioneer’s
chant is a series of numbers and filler words used to communicate
with bidders and sell items. Some of those phrases include bid, now,
dollar down, and will you give me. Many auctioneers use these chants
as calling cards or personal trademarks.
Naughton Auction Services
specialize in machinery, livestock, real estate, and estate
auctions. Dan loves any opportunity to get behind the microphone and
sell. One of the things that Dan prides himself on is his clarity,
the ability to clearly understand an auctioneer is important. Of
course, Dan also strives to be ethical and honest as well.
Starting out on his own, Dan auctioned livestock, show pigs, and
show cattle. Living in Pana, IL in the early 2000’s the business
began to take off, but really started to grow in 2006 when Dan and
his wife Amy moved back to this area.
Naughton’s used to do one
consignment sale a year in Mclean and today that has grown to
include their own property in Atlanta where they have several
closeout, farmer retirement, and livestock sales yearly. In person
and online auction services are available.

Dan and Amy’s son Reed has
shown interest in the business. Reed is a Senior at Olympia High
School and hopes to attend Auctioneer school this summer. Active in
FFA, Reed was the State of Illinois Profiling Winner this year for
his record books. This award is given to students who demonstrate
outstanding agricultural skills and competencies through record
keeping, leadership, and scholastic achievement through SAE
(Supervised Agricultural Experiences). Reed’s SAE involved him
working for his family’s auction service.
