Letters to the Editor

Lincoln Daily News welcomes letters of appreciation, information and opinion on matters pertaining to the community.

Controversial issues:
As a community we need to be able to talk openly about matters that affect the quality of our lives. The most effective and least offensive manner to get your point across is to stick to the issue and refrain from commenting on another person's opinion. Letters that deviate from focusing on the issue may be rejected or edited and marked as such.

Thanks for honoring my old friend Gene Hickey

To the editor:

My name is Kevin Rousey, I was born and raised in Lincoln. Gene Hickey lived next door to us on Olgesby Street in the early seventies.

Gene had recently been discharged from the Marines and I had the pleasure of becoming friends with Gene, Marsha and their infant son, Brad. Gene was an important part of my upbringing as a young boy during that time period. I have so many fond memories with Gene and his family that I could not possibly recite in this note.

I read LDN on a daily basis to keep up with the news of my hometown and was reading the article in regards to the Honor Flight that he took back a couple of months ago. Reading this article touched my heart for Gene. I knew Gene and those returning from a war that claimed so many innocent lives were treated very unfairly. Gene was someone I looked up to as a young boy and very fond of.

[to top of second column in this letter]

On this Veterans Day, 2024 I would like to recognize Gene for his military service and all the veterans that have sacrificed so much for Country. I have not had the pleasure of visiting with Gene in over 40 years and just wanted to share a small part of my friendship with Gene and the lasting memories I will always have for Gene and his family.

Kevin B. Rousey
