The
Hartsburg-Emden Stags volleyball team had a busy and successful
Saturday at the 48th Annual Quincy Invitational Volleyball
Tournament.
The Stags finished the tournament with a 4-1 record.
After losing the first match to the eventual tournament champions,
Macomb, the Stags dominated the rest of the competition, winning
each match in just two sets.
Coach Jennifer Hayes has her team clicking on all cylinders as the
postseason is quickly approaching.
The Stags currently have a 21-5 record.
“We had a great weekend going 4-1 at the Quincy Invite,” said Hayes.
“The day started off tough playing Macomb (21-2 record in Class 2A)
in a close 18-25 and 17-25 battle. From there, the Stags went 4-0,
while Macomb won it all.”
“The Stags played great. A five-match day is tough,” Hayes
continued. “It's grueling both mentally and physically. We showed a
lot of growth this weekend. We have been working tirelessly on some
areas of weakness, and I felt that we really improved in those
areas. Definitely moving in the right direction for postseason
action.”
Junior Alayna Briggs had 44 kills on Saturday and she continues to
step up and lead her team in a big way.

“Congratulations to Alayna Briggs on being named to the
all-tournament team,” said Hayes. “She led the teams with kills in a
dominating fashion. Well-deserved.”
Junior Celia Cross tallied 96 assists in the five matches on
Saturday and she reached a very elite milestone.

“Our biggest highlight was Celia Cross,” said Hayes, proudly. “She
hit the 2000 set assists mark. I have only had one other setter hit
that mark in our program’s history ~ Jillyn (Cross) Thornton from
the Class of 2008.
“2000 is a huge number, especially for a junior, but not surprising
because Celia is such an excellent setter,” continued Hayes. “Her
decision-making and accuracy is on point, making so many of her
setting attempts turn into kills for her hitters. Next up - 3000!
Going to be fun to watch!”
Congratulations to Celia Cross on her 2000th set assist!
Congratulations to Alayna Briggs on being chosen to the
All-Tournament Team!
Keep an eye on ALL these Stags.
The postseason starts October 28, 2024.
