The
Hartsburg-Emden Stags volleyball team completed the regular season
over the weekend at the Quincy Notre Dame Volleyball Bash
Tournament.
The Stags finished the tournament with a 1-3 record and despite just
the one win, Coach Jennifer Hayes was ecstatic about how well her
team performed in the elite power tournament.
Hayes stated that her team never backed down from the competition,
which featured the Stags up against three top ten teams in Class 2A
- Breese Mater Dei, Quincy Notre Dame and Macomb. Each of those
teams incidentally did have identical 28-2 records.
The Stags almost knocked off the eventual tournament champions, the
Quincy Notre Dame Raiders, taking the team to three sets on Friday.
The Stags won the first set 26-24. The Raiders won the second set
25-12. Set three was a thriller that saw the Stags up 14-13 before
the Raiders rallied to win 16-14.
The Stags then lost to Breese Mater Dei Friday night 16-25 and
10-25.
The Stags third loss was to Macomb on Saturday morning, 24-26 and
19-25.
The Stags then defeated Decatur St. Teresa Saturday morning 25-17
and 25-6.
Coach Hayes had a great perspective on the weekend and offered these
thoughts.
“The weekend was a tough one and just the way you prepare for the
postseason,” said Hayes. “You put your team in a place to prep for
any possible scenario. The Stags are ready. We have worked hard all
season for the next three weeks. Every team is 0-0 today. Go out and
take care of business. Play one game at a time and move on to the
next. One day at a time. Go Stags!”
The dynamic duo that is Alayna Briggs and Celia Cross were named to
the all-tournament team in Quincy. Yet another impressive
accomplishment by these two standout volleyball players.
The Stags finished the regular season with a 25-8 record.
Hartem will start the postseason tonight in the Class 1A Regional at
Mount Pulaski.
Hartem (2) will play Mount Pulaski (14) at 6:00 p.m.
