MLB roundup: Tigers come one out away from no-hitter

 

[September 14, 2024]  The Detroit Tigers came within one out of a combined no-hitter, then held on for a 1-0 win over the visiting Baltimore Orioles on Friday night.

Gunnar Henderson ended the no-hit bid with a triple off Tyler Holton. Kerry Carpenter's first-inning homer accounted for the game's lone run.

Beau Brieske and Brant Hurter combined for seven perfect innings before Hurter walked Adley Rutschman on a 3-2 pitch to lead off the eighth.

In the ninth, Holton retired Emmanuel Rivera on a fly ball before pinch hitter Coby Mayo was called out on strikes. Henderson then smacked Holton's next pitch down the right field line for his triple. Holton responded by striking out Anthony Santander to secure his eighth save.

Yankees 5, Red Sox 4

Aaron Judge hit a go-ahead grand slam in the seventh inning to snap a career-high 16-game homerless drought as host New York rallied to beat Boston.

Judge hit his major league-leading 52nd homer when he lifted a 2-0 fastball from Cam Booser (2-3) into the left field seats. It was Judge's first homer since he hit two on Aug. 25. He leads the majors with 130 RBIs.

Judge's eighth career grand slam propelled the Yankees (86-62) three games ahead of Baltimore atop the American League East after the Orioles lost 1-0 at the Detroit Tigers earlier Friday.

Mets 11, Phillies 3

Jose Quintana (9-9) pitched seven dominant innings for Philadelphia and visiting New York got three-run homers from Francisco Alvarez, Brandon Nimmo and Pete Alonso.

The left-hander gave up just three hits without a walk and struck out four to improve to 3-0 with a 0.36 ERA over his last four starts. Francisco Lindor added an RBI double before leaving with lower back soreness for the Mets, who moved within seven games of first-place Philadelphia in the National League East.

Aaron Nola (12-8) gave up six runs and six hits in 4 1/3 innings for the Phillies.

Rays 3, Guardians 1

Zack Littell allowed just two hits over six scoreless innings, Logan Driscoll clubbed his first career home run and Jonathan Aranda also went deep as visiting Tampa Bay beat Cleveland.

Littell (7-9) struck out five without a walk to extend his scoreless-inning streak to 13.

Tanner Bibee (11-8) allowed all three runs on the two Tampa Bay homers, finishing with eight hits and no walks allowed while fanning nine in six innings. A David Fry eighth-inning double plated the Guardians' lone run.

Royals 8, Pirates 3

Alec Marsh threw 5 1/3 quality innings, helping lead visiting Kansas City to a win over Pittsburgh.

Marsh (8-8) allowed just one run on five hits, while striking out 11 and walking two. Salvador Perez and Kyle Isbel each homered and tallied two hits, both driving in two runs. Tommy Pham also drove in two, guiding the Royals to their sixth win in eight tries.

For Pittsburgh, Bryan Reynolds and Oneil Cruz each tallied two hits and an RBI, as the Pirates had their four-game winning streak snapped. Joey Bart went 1-for-3 with a run driven in.

Blue Jays 4, Cardinals 3 (11 innings)

Alejandro Kirk drove in a run on a long RBI single in the 11th inning as Toronto topped visiting St. Louis.

Erik Swanson (2-2) got the win after pitching the top of the 11th for Toronto. Toronto right-hander Kevin Gausman allowed two runs, nine hits and two walks while striking out three in seven innings.

Thomas Saggese hit his first major league home run, a solo shot, and had two RBIs for the Cardinals. Right-hander Erick Fedde pitched five innings, allowing three runs, six hits and one walk with three strikeouts.

Brewers 2, Diamondbacks 1

Rhys Hoskins hit a two-run homer and five Milwaukee pitchers slowed Arizona's offense while recording a victory in Phoenix.

Freddy Peralta managed his way through five innings while improving to 4-0 in five career appearances (three starts) against the Diamondbacks. Joey Ortiz had two hits for the Brewers, who have won three of their past four games.

The Diamondbacks are a half-game behind San Diego for the NL's top wild-card spot after the Padres beat the San Francisco Giants 5-0. Peralta (11-8) gave up one run on six hits and four walks with five strikeouts.

Athletics 2, White Sox 0

Brady Basso pitched into the sixth inning for his first career victory and visiting Oakland opened a three-game series against Chicago with a shutout win.

Chicago dropped its franchise-record 16th straight home game and lost for the 18th time in its last 20 games. The White Sox must finish 10-4 or better to avoid matching the 1962 New York Mets for the most single-season losses in modern baseball history (120). Chicago was limited to six singles and shut out for the 18th time.

Lawrence Butler singled in the fifth inning to extend his career-best hitting streak to 21 games for Oakland, which has won three of its last four. Basso (1-0) allowed five hits with one walk and two strikeouts over 5 1/3 scoreless innings.

Astros 5, Angels 3

Alex Bregman hit a two-run homer and Yusei Kikuchi earned the win by tossing seven solid innings as Houston beat Los Angeles in Anaheim, Calif.

Yordan Alvarez had two RBIs and homered leading off the ninth for the Astros, who improved to 5-6 this month. Josh Hader recorded his 30th save of the year as Houston logged the 5,000th win in franchise history.

Angels starter Samuel Aldegheri (1-2) gave up four runs and walked five in two-plus innings. Nolan Schanuel had two hits and an RBI.

Rockies 9, Cubs 5

Rookie Hunter Goodman homered twice, including a tiebreaking grand slam in the eighth inning, and drove in a career-high seven runs as Colorado beat Chicago in Denver.

It marked the second two-homer game of the season for Goodman, who finished with three hits, and helped Colorado win its second in a row. Ezequiel Tovar also went deep among his two hits, and Ryan McMahon and Michael Toglia had a pair of hits each.

Michael Busch homered and finished with three hits, Isaac Paredes also had three hits and Cody Bellinger and Dansby Swanson contributed two hits apiece for the Cubs. Chicago has lost two in a row.

Mariners 5, Rangers 4

Julio Rodriguez hit a three-run homer with two outs in the eighth inning as Seattle rallied for a victory against visiting Texas, spoiling the return of Rangers pitcher Jacob deGrom.

Rodriguez, who went 4-for-5, launched a 1-1 knuckle curve from David Robertson (3-4) into the second deck in left field to complete the Mariners' comeback from a four-run deficit. deGrom pitched 3 2/3 scoreless innings in his first major league appearance since April 28, 2023. He allowed four hits, didn't walk a batter and fanned four while throwing 61 pitches.

Wyatt Langford hit his 11th homer for the Rangers, who lost for the third time in four games.

Padres 5, Giants 0

Fernando Tatis Jr. homered for the third straight game, Dylan Cease struck out 10 over six shutout innings and San Diego passed Arizona in the National League wild-card standings with a shutout road victory over San Francisco.

In the opener of a three-game series, San Diego wasted no time jumping on Giants starter Logan Webb (12-10). Luis Arraez singled on the All-Star's second offering, and two pitches later, Tatis launched his 17th home run over the center field fence. Cease (13-11) allowed just four hits and two walks in his 97-pitch outing.

Webb was pulled after four innings for the Giants, charged with four runs (three earned) on seven hits. He walked one and struck out four.

Nationals 4, Marlins 1

Luis Garcia Jr. homered and Dylan Crews stole two bases and scored a run as host Washington evened its four-game series with Miami Marlins.

Rookie left-hander DJ Herz (4-7) picked up the win by allowing one run on four hits over five innings, walking one while striking out five. Kyle Finnegan pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his 37th save. The Nationals finished with five stolen bases in the contest to improve to 17-0 this season in games they steal at least four bases.

Otto Lopez homered and Xavier Edwards and Javier Sanoja each had two hits for the Marlins, who suffered its fourth loss in the last five games. Edward Cabrera (4-7) was handed the loss after allowing two unearned runs on just one hit over six innings. He walked one and struck out nine but also committed two of the Marlins' three errors.

Braves 6, Dodgers 2

Gio Urshela and Jorge Soler each belted a two-run homer in the second inning to help Atlanta top Los Angeles.

Marcell Ozuna contributed three hits for the to reach 1,500 for his career, and Soler and Whit Merrifield each added two hits for the Braves, who remained one game behind the Mets for the final wild-card spot in the National League. Rookie Spencer Schwellenbach (6-7) picked up the win after allowing two runs on four hits in six innings.

Miguel Rojas launched a solo homer in the third inning and Tommy Edman added an RBI single in the fourth for the Dodgers, who have lost three of their last four games. Starter Landon (2-4) took the loss after permitting five runs on seven hits in two innings.

Reds 8, Twins 4

Elly De La Cruz hit his first career grand slam as Cincinnati surged to a win over host Minnesota.

De La Cruz recorded his milestone as part of a six-run seventh inning for the Reds, who won the opener of a three-game series. TJ Friedl finished 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs, and right-hander Julian Aguiar (2-0) got the win after allowing three runs on three hits in 6 1/3 innings.

Byron Buxton hit a solo home run in his return from injury for the Twins. Righty Bailey Ober (12-7) was saddled with the loss after surrendering five runs on six hits in 6 2/3 innings.
